Re: Advice for novice on new grinder please?

hm I see a pattern of posts emerging here

Good to see youre looking at a grinder too. Theres nothing wrong with a doser, so long as you dont fill it up and use stale coffee! I personally prefer the doserless versions, but the Mazzer doserless has a "grid" to break up the clumps (which the doser does for you) and this grid can trap coffee that will make your next dose a bit stale if you dont clean it.

The 3 favourites in this range are Mazzer Mini, Macap M4 and Compak K3. They each have doser and doserless versions (Mini E, M4D, K3T).

To improve on those youll have to get bigger burrs, which usually means quite higher cost and a much taller grinder. Im leaving that one for the future.

Again, you could look at them in-store and see which one you like.

Theyre a terrific little grinder Old_School and hugely robust.

With a little practice, youll find you can grind on demand and dose accurately. Turn it on, thwack like crazy until you have a mountain of coffee in your portafilter, switch off and then do what you do.

There are other great brands that offer a similar spec. but Mazzer has been around for a long time and is on the bench of many a CSer. Compak and Macap are also very common. Choose the one you like.

Advice for novice on new grinder please?

    Hi all,

Firstly, thanks for this site and the discussions - you guys certainly know your coffee. I feel a little timid taking my first steps amongst coffee immortals...

Ive had a pretty basic machine and grinder for a few years, but Im ready to upgrade. I dont mind what I pay, so long as it is quality, is basic to use and it lasts a long time.

Thus far I was thinking about the Mazzer Mini grinder, what are anyones thoughts about this? Im a bit worried that the Mini Mazzer may be a bit fiddly for home use with a doser? Are there any other grinders you would recommend?

    Would appreciate anyones advice.

    Many thanks
Working...
