Re: Breville BarAroma vs Gaggia MDF

From what Ive read the Breville grinder doesnt quite cut it so to speak and you yourself have said it doesnt grind fine enough.

Ive not owned the Breville but do own an MDF and while its not the best grinder Ive owned its not the worst and will grind fine enough for espresso.

Most people here will tell you youre better off investing your money in a grinder for a machine.

If youre happy with your machine get the grinder first as it will be an improvement and from there you can decide if you want to upgrade the machine now too.

Ive already got a buyer for the grinder and have my eye on a classic on ebay that is 2 years old and barley used, he said I could have it for $200 - I figure if I can sell my machine for $150 (its still under warranty) then Im onto a good thing (only have to pay $50 for the exchange to the MDF from my Breville).

So, is this a good path to go down or am I not really upgrading, rather moving across the market?

If youre planning to upgrade through the used market, check out the For Sale threads/posts here. You should be able to find a buyer for your current gear too.

I think you need to up your budget $s but check the threads to be sure. Things come and go all the time.

Thank you for your reply :-) Im very impressed that you went to the effort to find out more, thank you :-)

I decided, after advice from here, that it was worth using and have been using freshly roasted beans and grinding for my need. I find pre-ground dry and a little tasteless. I am still using the pressure basket though.

I do find that the finest grind isnt quite fine enough and dont really want to go down the Mod path, my skills arent up to pulling things apart and successfully putting them back together

I am still using the 800es but have been considering changing to a second hand Gaggia Classic. Id really love to go down the path of a better quality machine but dont have the funds I figure the classic will last me alot longer as it seems to be a better build machine.

I find its a little hit and miss with my foam. Sometimes I get a beautiful creamy foam, and other times not so much.

Oh . . . and I struggle to buy cafe made coffee now Cant help but compare it to the coffee I make at home and most of the time it doesnt cut it

So, I guess my question should be, is it worth upgrading my Breville set up for a basic gaggia system? If not, what are my other options with very minimal outlay (was thinking I may only be about $100 out of pocket if I sell the Breville grinder and machine and buy a new gaggia grinder new and machine second hand).

Oh, and as for my use . . . I make approx 2 lattes a day and once a week or so make a few extras for friends.

Did you want to start on the upgrade path or do you just doubt the bar-aroma ?

Ive been reading your earlier posts about the 800es and bar-aroma BCG450 as well as this thread. Do you still use the Breville 800es, and have you used/opened the bar-aroma BCG450 or are you still buying pre-ground?

After a year or so I guess you are using the BCG450. If are unhappy with your grind size from the bcg450, have you seen the following thread?
    http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1204007644
Its easy, fairly simple once you get past the triangular headed security screws (read the entire thread) and certainly the right price.

I used the Breville 800es with both pressurized and unpressurized baskets and it was not until I upgraded my coffee machine that my modded bcg450 didnt work for me (as well).
