This is what the espresso parts replacement pins look like. I got 2 so its easier to turn against the stiff springs on the Mazzers. They are supposed to be one piece & turned rather than a cast part. Looks the goods.
These break all the time, the burr carrier threads are very tight by design, and any coffee that has worked its way up into the threads will add significantly to the resistance. I frequently see Mazzers in commercial use that have a broken off adjuster screw in each position
If in future you are trying to un-stick a jammed burr carrier, first thing to do is put a bolt in on the opposite side so you can apply force evenly (and double check you ARE undoing it - reverse thread) - this should free it up.
Thanks guys for the helpful info. I just needed something during this holiday period. The espresso parts.com pin looks like it is an improvement on the Mazzer one.
I saw a real nice one at Coffee Alchemy but the Barista did not know where it came from. It was longer and had a nice big red knob on the end.
John, if want a different length, you have a two choices:
- buy the next longest belt and cut it down (for example, using a dremel)
- go to a proper fastener shop which will have many more configurations than the off the shelf items you can get at hardware stores like Bunnings
Alternatively, you could get a M5 stud so that you could thread a plastic handle on the other end. You should be able to pick up small plastic knobs with a M5 female thread already tapped.
Did you somehow need to apply a larger than usual force? Was the top burr dirty after reassembly or for some other reason?
FWIW, I have never seen a pin just break (so far :-/). Id think that Mazzer would outsource the component though- so its most likely a 3rd party production fault if the pin was defective.
Your required part is stocked in Sydney by site sponsor Coffeeparts: http://www.coffeeparts.com.au/mazzer/702339
Thanks to whoever posted the specs on the bolt required for a Mazzer Robur on HB and maybe even most Mazzers?
Broke the pin last night and being so close to Christmas was in a panic. Someone posted the specs as M5 0.80 pitch (M for metric & 5 for 5mm) so went to Bunnings this morning. See the pics - $2.50 for a pack of 4.
Went home - it fits.
On a $3000 machine no excuse for Mazzer to produce such a crappy cast part. I have ordered a one piece pin from espressoparts in the US but for now this will do.
