..is this a brand new unit? how is the consistency of the particle size?
Yep, brand new straight from the warehouse - which also makes it hard to take back so I wont until Im sure theres something wrong with it, since itll be a hassle with shipping and all.
Consistency is good - Im starting to think it may be the beans but I never had this much difference between 20 day old beans and freshly roasted beans before.

you cant have your gino rossi back

my experience with my gaggia mdf was that it could be pretty much dialled in once per batch of beans and then occasionally it would need to be tightened up towards the end of the week. the real problem with it was that the steps of the grinder were too big to really make the superfine adjustments necessary so i would just end up working them out by adjusting tamp or dose weight.

moving your rocky 4 steps from day to day or bean to bean sounds dramatic though. i would go back to basics - get the scales out, grind a precise weight every time to try to minimize the potential error in the dose and see if you can get improvements this way.

the suggestion that the upper carrier could be loose might also have legs - is this a brand new unit? how is the consistency of the particle size?

It seems very strange to have to adjust by such an amount all the time (everyday?). Maybe the burrs are loose on the carriers? The grinder is quite a simple device, as long as the burrs are without play and in alignament, it should work fine and consitently.

You could take it back to where you bought it from and ask them to have a look.

    Cheers

Are you dosing the same (correct) amount each time?
Yep.. or at least the same as Ive always have. And yes, adjusting tamp as I go too.
I just wish it doesnt take so long to make a morning coffee especially if its weekday (previous grinders e.g. nemox, gino rossi - were fine, same sources for beans).

I presume you are using quality, fresh beans?

The daily adjustments are not major..

Hmm.. my adjustments are around 4+ steps though..

The worse part is, I dont know whats right until extraction so Im constantly in the cycle of change, tamp, extract, not good, repeat..

Yes, that is normal. Its also normal to adjust the grind setting as the beans age to get the best extraction. The daily adjustments are not major, more like minor tweaking.

    Cheers

    Rocky Newbie

    Hi All,

I recently bought a new Rocky and I cant exactly say Im over the moon with it.

The main reason is because each time I get a new bean, I need to adjust to a completely new grind setting and its just becoming a bit of a hassle in the mornings before work.

So Im wondering, is this normal?

Working...
