If you were happy to consider a hand grinder the Orphan Espresso Pharos is within your price range and will deliver better results in the cup than anything costing up to about 10 times as much. It uses a large conical burr set in a manual custom designed body and is fast and easy to use.

The best $400 grinder is probably the Rosco hand grinder. Great build quality, excellent and consistent grind, simple and quick to clean - retains no grinds. Grinds easily, quickly and quietly - and will still be working long after the electric machines are binned. The minimal upper body exercise is a bonus.

    Cheers
    Peter

Hmm, but its way beyond my budget!

Would I notice a major difference with the k3t?
Nope- it is just slower- as is the mini

    Hi kaffineaddict,

Im looking for a doserless machine - i prefer grinding straight into the basket.

Are you able to get a super jolly, and replace the doser?
Not without significant expense- The doser cone alone is US$180+ and its one of many bits required. Best to just buy a SJ-E instead

I have the super jolly picked up second hand for four hundred, the mazzer mini looks pretty but from talking to quite a few owners its slow and isnt really much chop over the compak k3, certainly not worth the extra dollars. In one instance they even sold their newly acquired mini and went back to the k3 because they couldnt tell the difference, now that was on a breville dual.

In saying all that I have no experience in either the compak or mini as I went from a sunbeam grinder to the jolly.

Which in my wifes words were why didnt you get the grinder sooner lol

    Hi MFT,

Im not fussed with new, as long as its not to much of a d dog. When you say minis, are you suggesting the mazzer mini? If so, whats major differnece b/w the k3t and the mini?

Also, Ive currently got a SmartGrinder and am wondering if its actually worth the upgrade?

Does it have to be new?

If not there are a few minis for sale on here currently, which you might be able to get into your price range with some smooth negotiation and a little stretching of your budget. They pop up on here all the time.

i would highly recommend them, worth the $ for the  step up over the k3

K3 push or something second hand, there are a few mazzers about if you want a doser.

Im happy with the quality of my K3 Touch, I dont use the timed feature and its a bit loud and slow but the consistency is there.

    Grinder Recommendation - $400 - $500

    Hi All,

Im feeling like buying something, and that something is a new grinder! I currently have a dual boiler / smart grinder combo, and am looking for any recommendations RE: grinders in this price range. From my browsing of the grinder threads the k3 touch seems to feature, but would be interested in opinions...
Working...
