  • Buy 2nd Grinder for Decaf? Or Sell K3 and Get Better Grinder?

Usually in a day I will drink a Caffinated espresso and then a decaffeinated espresso later. I use a K3 touch grinder and its kind of a pain to mess up my grinder settings when switching back and forth.

I was thinking about getting a second grinder for the decaff. Would a Baratza Virtuoso Preciso be a good choice? Or would I be better off selling my Compak K3 Touch and buying a Mazzer Mini Electronic Doserless? If I did get a Mazzer Mini Doserless, would I still have the same issue of messing up my dialed in settings? Or would it be easy to switch back and forth on the Mazzer?

I havent used the Mazzer, but I imagine it would have the same problem you are currently having. If youre regularly swapping between settings, you could look into a stepped grinder, rather than stepless Compaks or Mazzers. However, there are issues with stepped grinder also. I think buying a second grinder is a great idea. Its what I did!

Alternatively, dont drink decaf (also what I am kinda doing).

If you are going to swap from one to the other all the time then a stepped grinder is the go as you will be able to go back and forth quickly to the settings required. It will be easier / quicker to make fine adjustments as the coffee ages, because you start from a known "start" setting.

There are no issues with commercial quality stepped grinders that I know of, other than that they innocently suffer from getting a bad (unwarranted) wrap in websites. Clients that use them day in and day out dont really have any problems with them that could be attributed solely to the stepped adjustment. Also, there are a lot of operators that blame their tools for their problems instead of taking responsibility for the real causes of their problems.

I dont know anything about a "Baratza" grinder, but a great starting point would be a Macap M4 (stepped), and I am looking at several brand new ones in boxes right now if you should wish to enquire.

Two grinders is an option of course, or you sell the stepless and replace it with one grinder that does both! You could look at it from a budgetary point of view, to see which way best suits your back pocket.

      Hope that helps.
