  • MDF VS Gran Maccino VS iMini

    Hi

I would like to know your thoughts on following grinders for a semi auto espresso machine (baby twin/ Isomac Venus/ Ascaso Dream):

Gaggia MDF - I have read only good on this grinder and have a feeling most of you would say I should choose this one, just not the prettiest on the counter.

Gran Maccino (by Isomac) and iMini (by Ascaso) - I have read very little on these but would like your input if you have had experience with them.

Out of the above grinders only the MDF is a doser.  I have read mixed views on the doser/doserless. which do you feel is better for the beginner?

I look forward to your replies!

You are asking for opinions from users that probably only have the experience of their own one grinder. So anyone that has experience of a grinder and likes it gives an affirmative response, but that doesnt tell you how that grinder compares to the other grinders. Eg, someone may say that love their grinder (being one of the 3 oj your list), but the other two you mentioned might be better grinders! So someone saying they like their grinder really doesnt leave you anywhere in comparing the three to eachother......

For my money, in this group only, and I do know all three of them, your choice should be between the MDF and the iMini. It then comes down to differences between them in their price and functionality.

    Hope that helps.

Re: MDF VS Gran Maccino VS iMini

I currently have a gaggia mdf and have upgraded to it from the gran mac.

The gran mac was good but I couldnt ever to get it to grind fine enough. Grind particle size was very consistent and build quality was good but without being able to grind to powder, it wasnt very good for espresso. As a last ditch attempt I tried unscrewing the endstop grub screw so that it would be adjustable all the way down to burrs touching however this still didnt help. I think the Burr carriers were just not that precise and allowed the burrs too much play.

The mdf on the other hand is great. I dont use the doser to collect grinds as I grind on demand. The design doesnt look like its changed a long time and that tells me if it aint broke, dont fix it. And its true, the design of the grinder just works. For espresso, its set to between 4 and 6 which means it can still grind finer. For the price (in Australia at the moment anyway) you cant beat it - imho. Ive even sold the idea to two friends who now also have mdfs in their setup at home.

      My 2cents.
      Tim.

Thanks for your input, I realise that the responses would be limited to each individuals experience. What I was hoping to determine was if one of the models was significantly better or worse than another.

I have an MDF too, and I still feel it was 150 well spent. Not sure what price point youre looking at (I assume about 300 judging from the other 2 grinders in your list?)

Anyway, if youre looking to spend that amount, just be aware that from time to time the MDF is sold at around half the RRP -- I think the last time was around Feb this year from Di Bella. The possible resale value might be a factor for you.

Re: MDF VS Gran Maccino VS iMini

We at CosmoreX Coffee have also been doing very very good deals on the MDF in the local market but the OP is in South Africa and may be looking at price vs functionality of these models in a market closer to (his) home.

Both grinders I mentioned above will work very well with the machines the OP is also looking to buy, but there is a big difference in functionality between the two models notwithstanding any price differences there may be. I am assuming he is looking at MDF doser grinder VS iMini doserLESS. In which case the iMini functions exactly the same as an Iberital Challenge doserLESS grinder if that helps.

              EDIT:
More news as of this arvo......In our market at present, the MDF is as rare as rocking horse dung. So if you were making a selection out of these three grinders around these parts right now, it would be the iMini by default.

Re: MDF VS Gran Maccino VS iMini

Thanks for the advice. Out of interest the Mdf retails at our only supply in south Africa at the equivalent of $180 and the other two at about $250. We have extremely high import duties which make all imported goods way over priced. The mdf is still quite reasonable tho...
