Re: Rocky - Doser or Doserless?

    Hey Fresh,
yeah i am still looking round at prices.. And still tossing up as to which rocky i should get ??? i can say that the postings here has given me food for thought. i guess one of the difficulties with the doser would be that unless you were marking coffee on a large scale you would have quite allot of coffee going stale in the hopper. And as such a higher level of wastage.

Both the doserless and the doser models have hoppers which you can choose to store coffee in or not. I have a doser model and am very happy with it. I store my beans in jars and only throw in a shot at a time – I never store beans in the hopper and I definitely don’t store ground coffee in the doser (yuk).

I have made a slight modification to the doser so it doesnt leave any grinds behind.....and Im very happy with it. No fuss, no mess, no standing around with the portafilter waiting for the coffee to grind. It suits my usage very well, but it may not suit yours. If you need to grind large amounts for friends, then perhaps the doserless is the way to go. If you dont mind cleaning out the dosser with a brush (or modify it) then perhaps the dosser model is for you.

      Cheers
      Ed

            Micstone,
When I bought my combo, I didnt know what the doser bit was really for. In my ignorance I had to ask the sale rep and she thought I was joking. I decided the doserless was the better option beause, 99% of the time, its coffee for one.
Plus I think it looks a little neater, and I can grind more in or less, each time I fill the PF, by manipulating the grind start stop button.

            Cheers

            Boris

Re: Rocky - Doser or Doserless?

              Hi All,

For what its worth, heres my two bobs worth.

Our coffee demands vary quite a bit depending on whether we have friends, neighbours or rellies over at the time. Mostly I just make lattes for my son and myself these days.

When it came time to make the decision on which Rocky to buy, I had almost talked myself into buying the Doser model to cater for when there are a few visitors about. However, since Im only making coffee for two most of the time and occasionally grinding 200-300 grams as gifts, I eventually decided to go with the D/L Rocky and Im glad I did.

Grinding for a few people or a lot is dead easy and there is less to go wrong at the end of the day since the D/L model is a simpler machine. Its also easy to clean with just the hopper and burrs to worry about.

I suppose if you were making coffee for a lot of people a lot of the time then the Doser model just about chooses itself otherwise, I guess it comes down to practicalities or preference in your particular circumstances. All the best,

              Mal.

Now that Ive got my Rocky - and it ended up being a Doser type (through supplier fault) I can share the following in regards to Mals statement.

The doser on the Rocky doesnt quite dose enough to fill the basket with what I consider the right amount of coffee so in reality its more of a hinderance than a help.

                Regards

                Mick

Re: Rocky - Doser or Doserless?

                  Hi DD,

this is something I ran up the last time the topic of doser VS doserless came up...:

"....Any coffee grinder with a dosing dispenser is next to useless in a domestic situation except where you are entertaining a group of people...

Notwithstanding all other advice above, you have to look at the reason for buying a grinder in the first place, which is to have a means of getting the best out of your coffee by buying beans and grinding them on demand before each brew. The "doserless" set up allows you to do this.

The DOSING dispenser on the other hand, if it is going to be used as a dosing dispenser in the way it is designed to be used, requires that you grind more coffee than you require in most instances before it will dose properly in the way it is designed to do.  You grind more coffee than you may need (particularly where there are only say 2 cups of coffee to be made), it causes wastage, and and if it is left for the next sitting you will be using stale grounds to make your "fresh coffee". A contradiction in having bought the grinder in the first place!

The other way to use a "doser grinder" is to only grind enough coffee for each sitting, which is a situation where you are not using the doser mechanism to dose at all, just as a means of flicking out the coffee as it grinds, in which case all you require is a doserless without the extra hassle.

In addition the doser Rocker has the usual domestic setup where you cannot adjust the mechanism to drop differing doses. It is only designed to drop the metered dose suited to the domestic sized rancilio standard filters supplied with silvia, audrey etc.. It wont drop a proper dose for any other commonly available filters (which are invariably bigger). This causes the unsuspecting coffee head to chase their tail around forever wondering why the espresso isnt brewing properly when in fact using the rocky doser with anything other than the smaller than standard domestic sized rancilio filters constitutes a situation of "under dosing" because almost all other commercial sized coffee filters are bigger and require a bigger dose of grounds for the espresso principle to work properly...

A doser mechanism without the facility to adjust the metered dose is next to useless.

DOSERLESS Rocky is not as messy as you might think and is a good little beastie...."

Hope this helps with your choice.

                  Regardez,
                  FC.

                    Hi again,

I can vouch for the D/L as a "clean machine" to use. I just lay a paper towel on the bench in front of Rocky before I start grinding and any grounds that manage to escape, fall on to the towel and are wrapped up and thrown in the bin upon completion.

                    Too easy... Really!

                    Cheers,
                    Mal.

                      Hi Everyone,
Ive only used the D/L but I love it. I usually only make one cup in the morning and one at night (atleast through the week).
To me it is much easier to grind just enough for the cup youre making and not have to pass it through the doser.
I usually leave a wettex under the Rocky and rinse it out afterwards.

Re: Rocky - Doser or Doserless?

Well.. after seeing how Ed goes about using his doser with the Rocky, I have started to do a similar thing (not quite the same precision as the master )
Ed only puts enough coffee in the grinder for the shot being done. This has the benefit of being able to turn the grinder on and wander around doing other vitally important stuff (for me) such as getting the 2 types of milk out of the fridge, doing cup and saucer prep, getting jug 1 ready with thermometer and getting jug 2 ready to bleed off wet steam.
When the rocky is done, the quiet hum tells me so and I am ready to dose.
Im actually now leaning towards the doser being a useful attachment in this style of coffee making now.

Drinking the Bali Ganung now. Pretty happy with it and my latte art is progressing nicely with the crema in this one!

                          Hi All,

I "kind of" do the same thing with my Rock D/L. I managed to find an old set of Tupperware cooking measures that just happen to be the right size to sit on the PF fork and get trapped under the plastic spout. Depending on how many people Im brewing for, Ill use the corresponding measure to suit that number of brews and then dispense into the PF basket for each brew in turn.

Works out well for me as I, like a lot of other CS members, make gifts of freshly roasted coffee to friends, neighbours and rellies from time to time. At least half of these people do not own a decent grinder or even any grinder at all so its up to me to grind the coffee to suit their particular brewing style before sending off in the post. This an easy task with the D/L and next to no mess is generated.

I suppose it comes down to the primary intended purpose of the grinder as to whether a Doser or D/L version best suits ones needs the best. As mentioned previously, I suppose if you are making a lot of brews for a lot of people a lot of the time then a Doser version would almost choose itself. We occasionally have a group of people come over for a visit, a brew and a gossip but as I described above, the D/L can be easily adapted to cope with this situation with no hesitation what so ever. So, Im really happy with my D/L Rocky and itll do me for long time yet.

                          Cheers,
                          Mal.

If you have a doser model, can the doser unit be removed and the doserless spout be installed?

What about the reverse, i.e. if you have a doserless unit, can it be fitted with the doser unit?

Im not aware of any that can be modified as standard (using manufacturer supplied parts)..... but inventive users have converted doser models to doserless...... With lots of tools, clever ideas and time.

As a general rule - what you have is what you will always have (and even if you could buy all the "spare parts" to modify one - at the price of spares you would probably be better off buying a whole new unit!!!!)

                                OK, decision made.

Doser it will be, and Ill be modding the sweeper vanes as soon as I get it.

Looking forward to getting the unit at some stage, now that the decision has been made.

BTW, since finding this forum, my wife thinks I have an obsessive compulsive disorder about coffee as Im always talking about grinders and coffees.  And pointing out to her every grinder we see when we go shopping.  I think shes right!    *eek!*   :-/
