  • Rocky setting for espresso vs plunger

question for all you silvia rocky combo users

I use the Rocky and Sylvia duo at home and would like to use a plunger at work.

Looking for recomendations on how far to back off Rocky to grind for plunger.

Got one of those boiling water (not) on tap at work, but can nuce for extra temp if needed.

You can back the grinder off to wherever it suits the flavour of the resulting plunger brew...the only reason people are sold really coarse "plunger grind" in this country is that someone (murphy ???) seems to think the grinds should not be able to get through the filter.

The reality is the filters used in plungers havent got a hope of stopping much except for the most coarse of particles...so it doesnt matter how fine / coarse you grind the coffee. So by all means, grind to suit your taste buds!

The Germans for example, almost pulverise their plunger grind, and live with the fines getting through...

So, if you wish you may even try the same grind you use in your silvia, and see how that suits. It  may well be you have to back it off a bit, but it most probably wont have to be backed off too far.

Essentially, grinding coffee coarse to try and stop fines coming through the plunger filter just robs you of the extra coffee flavour & body that you could have enjoyed. In Oz, this is called robbing you of value for money!

Try combinations of diff coarseness/fineness Vs amount of coffee per cup.

    Hope this helps,

    Regardz,
    FC.

I grind for plunger at work, and the same applies as FC said - I simply leave the last mouthfull in the bottom of the cup (slurry!?) I use the same grind Id use for the Carezza, which will be a bit courser than the Silvia, but not too far off.

I have mine black, so that gives it a little "sitting" time for the fines to sink, then I drink it to the last bit & just wash the mug next time. Too easy.

Brew time and coffee amount is most important - 170ml-200ml of just off boiling water + 2 tablespoons of ground + 4 minutes brew time = The perfect brew for work.

I agree FC. For 10 years I used supermarket brick, espresso grind coffee in a plunger at work.

... and now that same plunger sits behind the espresso machine at work as a back up

Yes you do get grinds in the coffee but not "turkish coffee" amounts.

Could it be the people that package coffee and want you to buy two? ???

I can see how some people wouldnt like the grinds in their coffee but what gets past the plunger is fairly fine and if you let is sit for little while before pouring (carefully and in a single motion) most of the suspended bits settle.

Like all things coffee... it comes down to taste and personal preferences.

Since I have done the upgrade thing a few times, I have 4 grinders.
I just use my dodgy Breville on its lowest setting to grind for my plunger at work. Works for me.

                So B.O.R.I.S.
What settings have you tried so far? Have you experimented at home by blind cupping with different grind settings? Shows what you came up with
