Yep, its not really practical to switch between espresso and french press with any grinder that has a worm drive adjustment. The K3T is the cheapest grinder that I know of that will allow you to do that with stepless adjustment (actually, I havent played around with adjusting it for FP, but I presume that there would be no problems). Other than that, youre pretty much looking at a dosered mazzer, a mini E or a compak.

It would be nice to have the ultimate grinder that did a fantastic job at everything with a tiny footprint, rock-solid construction, fast grind speed, clean operation and low price, but to say that it exists would be a lie.

    Cheers,

    Luca

    So Luca, Chris, anyone,

as i use french press at home as well espresso the compak k3 touch would be the better suited

grinder other than the Ascaso i2, would that be right?

    Craig.

I suppose i want the best results from the smallest grinder, but if i have to go larger i will.
Hi Craig- if you want doserless and micrometric (in champagne), go the K3T. It has settable timer function for a single or double (which incidentally I have never been able to get just right :-/). Flicking the power (rocker) switch the other way allows for always on if you wish to pulse to top up.

Another great option- though more expensive- is the Macam MC4- their doserless deli grinder...

    Chris

Isomac would be another small grinder to consider if price was no object.
I thought the small Isomac grinders (Gran Maccinino & Macinino Prof Inox) were simply a rebodied Lux at rather higher price. Or is another model being discussed?

only if you want to pay the best part of $500 (or more!)

Is this one doserless too Luca?
Its not more than $500! I think that the i1 is intended to be a Rocky competitor. Which is interesting because for the Compak range, Ascaso built grinders that had smaller burrs than the equivalent competitors, whereas for this they seem to have gone for larger burrs. But I gather that the burr size might have increased over the years, just as the K3s burr size seems to have been bumped up to make it more credible against the mazzer mini. Maybe the answer is in the motor. Who knows? Well find out tomorrow, hopefully. Im not on at First Pour - Ill be studying for exams, but James has directions to fool around with it.

Yep, we got a doserless i1. The doser seems a bit plasticky at first blush. But who knows; maybe someone higher up the totem pole will decide to buy one of those for kicks, too ;P

Anyhoo, Id best get back to the books - procrastination is addictive ;P

    Cheers,

    Luca

And would the Isomac rate in any of this?

okay all those small grinders suggested make one hell of a noise when grinding!

I guess we should throw the Iscaso grinder stocked my Veneziano in to the mix....I pulled some shots with it and Id rate it.
We have the i1 grinder in at the moment, just for kicks. This one has a metal burr carrier and flat burrs, with the same stepless adjustment mechanism. It will be fun to pull some shots with it tomorrow!

    Cheers,

    Luca

The smallest entry level espresso grinder would be the Nemox Lux (can be had on special for $210), followed by the Sunbeam EM480 ($180 ish) then the Rancilio Rocky (sub $400) and then the Iberital Challenge, being the tallest (circa $280).

    Hope this helps!
