  • Hyundai to Rolls of burr grinders

    Hi guys,

Ive never really looked at grinders that much as Im happy with the one built in to my Napoletana. Howevever seeing a few Silvias for sale at a reasonable price made me consider the total damage if I decided to shift to discrete units. There have been a few threads where people have asked Whats the best grinder for $xxx?, but they only address the price point in question.

That raised the question with me of where the various different burr grinders on the market sit in the scale of useless to ultimate, and how much one could expect to pay for such a unit at this point in time.

Im wondering if fellow snobs, especially those who sell grinders, can provide a bit of a scale outlining grinder name, approximate price range, a recommendation of how good they are for espresso, and any relevant notes e.g. common breakages, burr lifespan and availability, etc. Names Ive heard thrown around the place are the Sunbeam EM0480, Sollis 166, Iberital Challenge, Rancilio Rocky, Lux and Mazzer (almost all of which are nothing more than names to me). Thanks!

Feel free to copy the list below to submit your information.

    Grinder Name:
    Price Range:
    Espresso ability (1=poor, 5=great):

      Gday Chris,

Would but away from the phone ATM. Also Im not necessarily looking at buying anything yet, or at all, as Id need to get approval from the Minister of Domestic Finances . The prospect just raised the question in my mind; also I figured itd be useful for others to know in one thread rather than posting numerous price-specific threads.

          Greg,

Grinders (especially the features they provide) is akin to the flat VS convex debate with tampers ;D

Some like dosers, others dont.... some want micro adjustment of grind.... others reakon it isnt necessary.... some want to grind for both a plunger and also an espresso machine.... others are prepared to pay for an espresso only grinder and a second grinder for plunger :-/

And all of the above are valid points!

My advice (and this is only my opinion!!)

          1. spend as much as you can afford + a little
          2. get a doser model and grind through the doser (gives better grind distribution)
          3. get a grinder which has micro adjustments (very small steps or continuously variable)
          4. accept it is an espresso only grinder
          5. buy it from a site sponsor!!!!

Others will disagree with some/all of the above - after all it is YOUR personal choice and needs which matter.

          Sorry cant be more helpful.

Re: Hyundai to Rolls of burr grinders

Fair enough, I must admit Im very green on grinders and hoped it wasnt that sort of question.

What I was after was simply the names of some grinders, their approximate price, and known good or bad points, NOT so much statements on which is better as I know that can be very subjective. If I was looking for one Id have no idea where to start.

            E.g.:

            Grinder Name: Lux
            Price Range: $199-$229
            Espresso ability (1=poor, 5=great): 3
Notes: Very noisy motor. Enough particle consistency to make reasonably consistent espresso

Am I unrealistic in presuming this is achievable? Honest question, I may be. I personally wouldnt know whether an Iberital Challenge is better than a Mazzer Mini or a Rocky, or where they sit in the price range. I reckon itd be a real help to those looking for a grinder, regardless of the price point as this could cater for all.

I think your suggestion is good Greg.

I know my Macap is supposed to be better than a Rocky and it costs more.

When you finally do get your answers and are ready to make a decision, I agree with:

"1. spend as much as you can afford + a little"

Agreed with principle 1, but as said Im not acutally in the market for one, just gleaning information. So now Thundergod, fill the blanks!

                  Greg,

Site sponsors (other than that bloke who sells tampers ) dont seem to like advertising their prices or comparing products between their offerings...

I guess this is so they dont start a price war / quality war between them - and that is understandable....

More often than not they will advise on the forum if they have an item in stock but a PM is required to get the price.....

There are probably not many of us who have tried enough different grinders to do a valid feature comparison..... CoffeeGeek does have some comparisons listed.

For me- the La Cimbali Jnr rules.... does everything I want superbly, weighs a ton, extreamely well built but is definately an espresso only grinder..... and costs heaps new - but you can sometimes get them at a reasonable price second hand.

Re: Hyundai to Rolls of burr grinders

IMO should split the list based on the type of grind adjustment mechanism. Whether the grinder is found rebadged, or carry the same burrs. Burr diameters for those number obsessed... My prices are guesstimates from memory. Im sure with google(Au) and some time, one can get a rough idea of how much they cost.

                    stepped: Sunbeam (~$180)-> Lux et al (~$240 to $300) -> Rocky (~$400) -> Anfim -> Macaps (>$550) -> Mahlkoenig doserless (~$1800)

                    stepless: Iberital (~$250) -> Nuova MCF -> La Cimbalis / Mazzers (>$650)/ Compaks (>$550) / Macaps (>$550) / Versalab (~$1400, plus a visit Bunnings :-X )

Point taken, but the intention would only be to give people a ballpark figure not to show that sponsor A sells it for $20 less than sponsor B. The kind of thing posted by rice is fine, in fact its already answered part of my question. Add a few pros and cons to each of them and the thread could almost be closed.

Re: Hyundai to Rolls of burr grinders

I reckon it would be pretty hard to score my grinder in terms of not having compared it to others. I have the Iberital which is a great price for a conical. Serves it purpose for me but at the same time wouldnt last as long as a mazzer. I would certainly recommend it to others but in saying that if I had of had the budget would of gone a mazzer or similar.
It would be hard for a sponsor to commit to scoring all the grinders they sell I am sure. I see what you are trying to do though Greg and I am sure people looking at buying or upgrading a grinder would appreciate a head to head test of a number of grinders. At the same time I have complete faith in the sponsors to do the right thing by the purchaser when recommend a grinder in the purchasers budget. To give all that information straight away in a forum might be too much of a stretch though. Some people may just read and go and buy somewhere else. Obviously there is no guarantee that when people contact a sponsor that they would buy from them either.

Fair enough. It was just an idea but if its going to be too difficult to do then it can be shelved. I guess the underwhelming response thus far is an indication of that Certainly if I ever am in the market to buy one Ill be visiting a sponsor, but in the meantime I had hoped to get a broad-brush picture of the grinder market so I kinda know what people are on about when the names start to flow.

Perhaps the thread needs to be viewed more from the point of view of gaining and sharing knowledge rather than a commercial thing? Like, if this was a car forum and I sold many different brands of car, I wouldnt have a problem saying:

"The Barina is a small 3/5 door hatch, about $14k with a 1.3-1.6l engine depending on the model. Same idea as the Ford Focus and similar price but the Focus has a larger engine. From there you go up to the Astra (about $19k), then the Commodores which are all V6 or V8 and range from about $33k to $50k. Similar to the Falcons, reviews at www.example.com if youre after more info. The top of the range is the Statesman/Caprice and Fairlane/LTD which top out about $80k"

                          Yeah?

I also reckon what rice posted is the way to go.
We dont need to know EXACT prices, but its good to know a ballpark figure when youre looking at these things.

Ive only ever used a Rocky, so I cant speak for any of the others, but I do know that it does the job for me, and I know it was in the ~$400 range. If I wanted to upgrade (as if THAT would ever happen), then Id like to have a rough idea of whether a Mazzer Mini E or Macap M5 or Compack etc. is in my realm or not. Same with machines really. Sometimes you have absolutely no idea of what price youre looking at for some of these shiny trinkets.
