Re: Hyundai to Rolls of burr grinders
This is my first grinder so take this with a grain of salt. This is only my experience of the grinder so far.
Grinder Name: Iberital Challenge (doserless)
Price Range: <$300 (at time of writing)
Espresso ability: 4-5
Notes: First impression is that it is quite noisey but not unbearable. It is stepless and is great when dialled into to a single application. So if you switch between espresso and plunger grind you may not like this. But for single function of espresso grind it is great. A heap of range and adjustment via a knob on the side of the grinder. Great bang for buck for this grinder. There is also a doser version available. Great entry level grinder.
Grinder is available from site sponsors.

Thanks Joe, all opinions gratefully received. Some of course may disagree with any opinion, but at least its a starting point for novices.

Re: Hyundai to Rolls of burr grinders
Hi Greg
Ive come in late on this discussion, but heres my $0.02c
Grinder Name: Gaggia MDF
Price Range: around $300
Espresso ability: 4-5
Notes: Not very fashionable (mine is burnt orange!), but IMHO does the job well and it has been extremely reliable over the last 15 years. I imagine there are much quieter grinders on the market, but for the price I think theyre good value.

Or maybe that will speed up the process, procrastination whilst studying can make a person ensure that all other jobs in their life are done.Originally posted by Greg Pullman link=1163023806/15#20 date=1163136733I suspect with his exams it wont be immediate.

I say again, I agree with your original sentiments.
Were here to help each other after all, and a ballpark list is a great idea.
We can argue whether my Macap is worth the extra dosh over a Rocky as a separate matter.

Absolutely, I agree entirely and youve picked up the exact sentiment behind my original post. Luca sent me a HEAP of useful information which has satisfied my curiosity, on the condition I kept it all to myself as not all agree with his opinions. Ive asked him to censor the list and post it for all as I feel its very valuable, even just as one mans thoughts, so well see whether it happens, but I suspect with his exams it wont be immediate.

Exactly, I know when im shopping for something and im still in that "what should i buy phase" i dont care about the best acheivable price (just yet), i just want to know where a particular item fits in the grand price scheme.
For instance, its pretty easy to just say Sunbeam 0480 - about $180, Rocky about $450, Mazzer Mini about $600, Cimbali about $800
and wham!, youve got yourself a rudimentary list, and you know that all things being equal, the Mazzer should be more expensive than the Rocky and so on.
Another thing that helps with is being able to ask yourself...is the Mazzer really worth the extra money over the Rocky...or..."if im going to spend the extra money to get the Mazzer...should i spend a bit more and get the Cimbali ....or would i just be paying the name and not really getting extra performance" ....etc etc.
Maybe this isnt how most people work thru a purchasing decision, but its exactly how i do it.
While i am not solely driven by price, it is ultimately what everything comes back to. "is X worth the extra money" ..."yes or no".
I cant answer that fundamental question until i at least have some idea of what they cost.
Id love to see such a list when if you get around to compiling one, and one for machines would be a great help also.

Re: Hyundai to Rolls of burr grinders
You could find the ballpark of every grinder on google so why not just make a list... its like doing some research and puting it into list.

Man after my own heart!Originally posted by fatboy link=1163023806/0#14 date=1163049333I also reckon what rice posted is the way to go.
We dont need to know EXACT prices, but its good to know a ballpark figure when youre looking at these things.
Ive only ever used a Rocky, so I cant speak for any of the others, but I do know that it does the job for me, and I know it was in the ~$400 range. If I wanted to upgrade (as if THAT would ever happen), then Id like to have a rough idea of whether a Mazzer Mini E or Macap M5 or Compack etc. is in my realm or not. Same with machines really. Sometimes you have absolutely no idea of what price youre looking at for some of these shiny trinkets.
Unless perhaps were both crazy??! Opening post requested Price Range, so yes were only after a guide like rice posted. Other reason is that of course over time prices will change, but a range will still give a good ballpark figure. Once people have an idea of whats out there and what they can afford they then go shopping for an exact unit and exact prices.

Re: Hyundai to Rolls of burr grinders
Fair enough. It was just an idea but if its going to be too difficult to do then it can be shelved. I guess the underwhelming response thus far is an indication of that
Certainly if I ever am in the market to buy one Ill be visiting a sponsor, but in the meantime I had hoped to get a broad-brush picture of the grinder market so I kinda know what people are on about when the names start to flow.
Perhaps the thread needs to be viewed more from the point of view of gaining and sharing knowledge rather than a commercial thing? Like, if this was a car forum and I sold many different brands of car, I wouldnt have a problem saying:
"The Barina is a small 3/5 door hatch, about $14k with a 1.3-1.6l engine depending on the model. Same idea as the Ford Focus and similar price but the Focus has a larger engine. From there you go up to the Astra (about $19k), then the Commodores which are all V6 or V8 and range from about $33k to $50k. Similar to the Falcons, reviews at www.example.com if youre after more info. The top of the range is the Statesman/Caprice and Fairlane/LTD which top out about $80k"
Yeah?
