Nothing a good piece of yoga mat from Bunnings cant help methinks.

Just makes it just a bit more difficult to push back underneath the cupboards when finished.

Ive noticed that mini moves around on my bench too...maybe we need a sticky feet mod!
The feet can be adjusted. That stopped mine from wobbling around.

Its not that the grinder is wobbly, more so that it slides around on the bench. Mine has nearly slid off the counter a couple times. Its probably due to the hardness of the rubber feet.

I have never had these problems with Mazzers before....and the reason it throws left is because the dosers are meant to be full of coffee....this will eliminate any left throw....but the home barista cannot and will not sacrifice quality of cup (for fear of stale coffee) and money....as inevitably if you grind more, the more you will throw out if you are only making a few cups.

poddys enjoying too much coffee i reckon :P

just a note abt the mini. its going strong! really liking the consistent grind on them and the doser as a recepticle for the grinds. means my hands are free to do prep other stuff in the meantime.

I have also found this to be a pain. Mainly because the grinds shoot to the left of the grind catcher tray and onto my bench which means more cleaning up.

Is there any other way to rectify this? I did a fairly primitive mod and attached some silver sticky tape to the bottom of the doser (see below). I gave it a bit of a test and it seems alright. So I will see how it goes. Anyone else have better (more aesthetically pleasing ) solutions?

Hazel showed me a mod the other day.
She said you can get small pieces of aluminium plate from Bunnings that you can cut and shape easily.

Ill try remember top get a picture next time I visit.

Basically though, youd attach it to the front of the hopper with those screws in the picture above.
(I have the same screwsetup on my Macap.)

You cut the aluminium sheet part way through and bend it under the hopper to act as a throw shield just like your tape above.

Thanks TG! Thats a great idea! If you could post a pic that would be great too. I would love to try that.

Alternatively you could just buy a quality grinder that just doesnt throw to the left.

I wouldnt say its not a quality grinder....Id say its just a shortcoming....seeing as we use it as it is not intended to. If the dosers are fuller, they wont throw to the left. Or you can just thwack real hard.

                                Re: Downgrade/upgrade to Mazzer Mini

                                Hi guys,

The throw left thing is as a result of the sweeping vanes moving from right to left and, so, tends to be a problem with most grinders, to varying degrees.

There are a few ways to make the throw left thing less of a big deal.

The first is to thwack the doser really fast. This slams the coffee into the left-hand wall of the exit chute, which makes it drop straight down. The concern with this method is that some grinders (unlike Metreo, I have no need to bag brand names, so I wont give examples) have weak springs in the doser that will break, but the mazzer springs tend to be pretty strong. I tend to thwack at a million miles an hour.

The second is to dose a lot more slowly. This means that the grinds dont pick up as much inertia, so they dont fly as far left.

The third is to build a deflector, as TG has said.

Finally, you can remove the PF fork and hold your PF where the coffee will actually land. Thats what Im doing at home at the moment - Ill see how much I like it.

If youre implying that the mini isnt a quality grinder, I think that thats entirely uncalled for.

If you are suggesting that there are other grinders out there that dont have this problem, you should go and use a bunch of dosered grinders. The only dosered grinder that I have used that didnt throw grinds to the left had other, much more significant problems with it that would make me never want to buy it. As for doserless, the mini E is quite clean, but most doserless grinders with a chute design tend to either spray coffee all over the place or clump a lot, usually while youre standing there holding the portafilter and waiting for the machine to grind.

Unfortunately, grinder manufacturers arent exactly eager to listen to their customers. People who actually care about their coffee are a relatively small segment of the market. The first manufacturer to actually listen to what baristi want will make a small fortune, but I dont think that that prospect is enough to revolutionise the industry. There seems to be some innovation at the moment, but it will result in very expensive commercial machinery, not stuff for home use.

                                Cheers,

                                Luca
