Is it ok to remove the chute guard permanently? The manual says not to, but it makes brushing out the doser much easier without it. the manual also says that it shouldnt be used for domestic coffee making. whoops
    cheers

on another note. I just got it today. It looks huge next to Silvia and thats without the hopper 8-) (it didnt fit under the cubbord.)
it gives a noticeably more even grind then the challenge. I think I could taste the difference too. it seems to give a clearer flavor profile in an espresso. On the iberital a balanced shot always had hints of sourness and bitterness. that seems to have been reduced. maybe my imagination.

    Anyway Im more then happy

you can take it off...it just slides upwards being held in by those screws. no need to unscrew the screws. But if youre wanting to get access to the chute itself like a manual grinder, youll be thwarted by auto stop fill flap.

Sure are big, I have one sitting next to my Unico Splendor the Rocky is feeling very insecure between the two. There are a couple of mods you can make, a domed cup or specialty made dome that fits over the star directing the grounds into the vacant doser chamber. Also if you use the hopper stopper (black plastic slide), open it let the neck fill and then close it and grind you will find that you have a little over a double basket of coffee in the doser. The other mod that is useful is to put some tape on the bottom of the star to help sweep all the grounds out of the doser. They are one hell of a good grinder though, quick fairly quiet and very even.

just another quick question. as Im the type who switches between regular and decaf coffee. Im finding that rather then pulling unused coffee back out (like I did with iberital) its easier to just put the correct amount in and grind it all. Is there any negative effects to having the grinder running with no coffee in the burrs? Ive heard that its bad but I cant think of why. The only problem I can imagine is that in a cafe situation where they use auto cutoff when the doser is full that the grinder would continue indefinatly. which doesnt apply to me.

            Cheers Sam

              Sam,

Thats the best way to grind coffee.... and what I do (most) of the time....

Some say the beans jump about a bit and it will give you an uneven grind - but I havent noticed any problem....

You wont have any stale beans in the hopper..... and this wont hurt the grinder either.

Hmm... maybe mine is different but it looks like you have to unscrew them. I tried to give it an upward tug but no such luck  :  Ill try a little later and see how i go   :-/

Suggest you DO use a screw driver - at least for the 1st time. Then when you have the hopper safely off you can check out whether yours has an option to slide. Dont tug! :P

Some mazzers require you to unscrew the finger guard off...some dont...my bad

Well turns out my super jolly timer required unscrewing. Thing is, now i have two holes in the side of the doser. :-/

Cant you just put the screws back in?

My Macap has 3 screws in the front to hold the plastic tamper.
You can put more left or right.
Whichever way you choose youre left with one screw doing nothing.
I never put mine on so just have the 3 screws in place.
                            Looks better than 3 holes.

The screws dont actually screw into the doser they go through it and screw into recesses in the guard.
