    Re: Grinder Suggestions?

    Gday Guthers,
will the grinder be used only for espresso, or will it have other uses, ie plunger, drip, etc?
This can have an effect on what grinder/s will be suggested.

      Re: Grinder Suggestions?

      Hi Lovey,
Its just for the espresso. I have a plunger but it is only used very, very rarely so regular adjustment of the settings is not an issue at all.
Since I posted this Ive also looked at the Iberital Challenge and the Ascaso I2 Conical.
Any additional thoughts on these for my situation?
I make 2 coffees every morning and maybe 2-4 a day on weekends - if that helps.

      Cheers

        Re: Grinder Suggestions?

        Hi Guthers,

Both the Ascaso I2 and the Iberital Challenge are great grinders, provided that you appreciate that:

        (a) they have a worm gear adjustment;
        (b) they make a fair bit of noise; and
        (c) unlike the mazzers, et al, they are not built to last, although you should still get a pretty decent run out of them

The Ascasos have, IMHO, a much nicer fit and finish than the Iberital Challenge, but now that the I-mini is out, I dont think that the I2 is a good enough deal for us to continue stocking it. The I-mini seems to be very similar in build quality and performance, but it is a fair bit smaller and a fair bit cheaper. We havent gotten any in yet, but Renzo at Di Bartoli, who put us on to them, has them in stock.

        Cheers,

        Luca

PS. Thanks again for letting me check out your I-mini, Renzo!

          Re: Grinder Suggestions?

          Thanks Luca,

The worm gear adjustment just means you need to turn the dial lots of times to make any major adjustments right?
I guess I will need to investigate the noise situation for myself. My current grinder is pretty loud, but bearable.
We are hopefully going to Di Bartoli this afternoon to check them out.

          Thanks again,
          Guthers

            Re: Grinder Suggestions?

You could try the Lux that I have and produces no mess at all or the Iberital Challenge. They both grind well and are a lot cheaper then the Rocky. But like always, most here will tell you that if you make heaps of coffees, want a quieter machine, and one that will last you longer then get a Rocky. Ive had my Lux for around 2 years and it is till working and looking like new though.

The Lux is very small (much smaller than the Challenge) and a very clean grinder with stepped adjustments. Often I have nothing to wipe or clean after grinding. It has a 250 grm hopper.

The Challenge is much larger, but still considered to be small-ish grinder, and has stepless adjustments. It has a 500 grm hopper (2x the size of the Lux).

If I were you, for your situation I would buy a Lux. If you are going to upgrade to an espresso machine then I would get the Challenge.

Cheap grinder that does the job!

              Hi there

I love my coffee, but am only a student meaning I dont have the *best* machine out there (have a Sunbeam Cafe Crema). I am after a cheapish grinder that will grind for my little espresso machine...I want something fairly easy to clean, something that will get the grind right, and something that wont make a mess EVERYWHERE.

I had a grinder from target a few years ago which I found to be awful! Not sure of the brand, but I would rather not go back there (hence why I am here asking you guys).

It would be good if I could get this grinder online. I look forward to your recommendations - Im really sick of buying ground coffee and not having it as fresh as it could be.

              Charlotte.

Hi Charlotte and welcome to CoffeeSnobs

Have a look at Gregs post:

                http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1192610696/11#11

That pretty much says it all.... minimum (and that is absolute minimum) for good espresso is the $200 Sunbeam....

Anything less..... and you are probably just as well off (better off if you are looking at $100 - or less - grinders) using stale preground....

The grinder is FAR more important than the actual coffee machine.

                  Re: Grinder Suggestions?

Hi Charlotte, welcome to Coffee Snobs.

I believe the internals of the EM0450 are the same as the 0480.
The difference between the supposedly being the metal body on the 0480 for an extra $50.

I bought an EM0450 recently to use at work and it grinds OK.
It is a little messier than my Macap but you quickly get used to minimising the stray grinds.

                  For that price, its good.

I suggest you put up with what youve got or use at the moment and save up; try not to be tempted to buy something that is just OK, cause you will probably end up being dissatisfied with it and want to upgrade again in the not too distant future.

I know of a young man who is a member here, that has taken out a substantial loan to buy a fantastic set-up that should last more than a decade and probably a lifetime. IMO, thats actually one hell of a wise choice!

                        Re: Grinder Suggestions?

I cant agree more with Dennis, since joining CS in April 07 Ive gone thru a breville thingy, gaggia mm, em0480, rocky doserless and now satisfied with a cunill tranquilo.
Save ya dollars and wait.... Seriously!
And I want another grinder now so I have two one for daily blend and one for "just roasted testing" and another to grind for friends who annoy me for my coffee but are too stingy to buy their own grinder!

Hmm yes good point. It will take me an age to save up though! Oh well, its not like preground coffee is that bad, is it?

everytime you make a coffee at home put $2.50 in a jar, youll have it in no time..
Well that works for me at least

                              The EM0450 is only $150.

But if it was me Id wait and save.

Not everyone has the luxury of being able to afford a MAcap first up like I did.
Even then I didnt want to spend too much on a second grinder for work, hence the EM0450.

Im using an MDF at work now. A much better grinder, but again more expensive.

Righto, Ive decided on a Lux grinder. I have put a wanted post in the hardware for sale section in an attempt to get a second hand one. If all else fails Ill just have to get a new one in six or so months.

Will the Lux go well with the Sunbeam Cafe Crema? I havent got real baskets for it yet, is that the only modification I need to make? and where can i get these from online???
