    Re: Grinder Suggestions?

Doesnt the 450 have a switch activated by pushing the PF against the stand (like the 480)? My guess was that the others have a switch elsewhere that you have to press by hand, making grinding a two-handed operation...

Hang on, why the hell am I sticking up for choice??

"Grind button has to be held continuously while grinding."

This was a Bad Point moted against a couple of the grinders but not the Sunbeam EM0450.
I have the Sunbeam and it needs the button held continuosly while grinding.
This shows Choice is less than professional in their testing and documentation of the results.

Choice used to be very good and listen to their readers a long time ago. They no longer do. I have found a lot of their comparisons a bit strange lately.

Its got to the stage now where I dont even want to read anything Choice has to say about anything to do with coffee... They have an appliance mindset which they seem to apply to anything that has an electrical cord hanging out the back and bears very little resemblance to anything approaching methodical research from within the specialist coffee industry. Just makes me angry these days so I dont bother anymore,

    Mal.

Dont know if this article can help anyone since i know how you all hate CHOICE articles kekeke
Damn straight about that. That article is shocking! If they used the Silvia or Sunbeam EM6910 as there test machines, the only grinders that would come out on top would be the Rocky and EM0450.

    Terrible article!

Oh, and how to do you get good crema out of stale Vittoria beans?? - oh, thats right, Pressurised baskets!

    DOH!!!!! > > > > :

The MDF is a terrific grinder when I had one on loan for a few weeks until I got the used commercial Gaggia MG .The Ascaso and La Spaziale grinders from recommended by the site sponsors look like they mean business too!
I think Ive developed a Grinder and Coffee machine fetish! ;D

Thanks FC! At least we will now know who of the site sponsors will have them when they are available.

Not that I need one at this time.

If anyone else is reading this thread and trying to make decisions about which grinder to buy, I spoke to the importer of Gaggia equipment yesterday and it seems their next shipment hasnt actually left Italy yet.

They are out of stock of MDFs, and as they havent left Italy yet I expect these grinders wont hit the shops again until the new year.

If youre looking for a Christmas present and have your heart set on an MDF, I guess you will have to select something else except if you can find a retailer that has some stock left over.

Well have plenty of Rockies, Macaps & Challenges, and I guess well have our MDFs sometime in January.

    Hope this helps.

    Regardz,
    FC.

I ended up going with the Lux because I couldnt find anyone that could get a hold of an MDF (and really is looking too huge).

Thanks to the coffee barrun for the help, and everyone else in this thread for the suggestions.

Total backflip on my part, I know.

Monti it was mentioned previously that the 0450 is abouit $50 cheaper than the 0480 and has the same internals. I think d-s has decided on the MDF though.

I say, go and have a look at them in person.

You wont believe how small the Lux is. Because of that it is so easy to clean up around and under it. You can shift it easy and takes by far the less room in your kitchen. It grinds as good as any of the others and the least messy (which was important to you). Contrarily to what others said I never found it unstable and never tipped over or moved when I grind. Even grinding one handed it is fine. Adjustments are stepped and easy to make. You pretty much just go one click forward or back ever.

Even though I prefer the Lux, I would buy the Sunbeam EM0480 if I was on a tight budget like you. I bought one for $170 brand new. It grinds as good as the Lux and if you use the container that it comes with then it makes no mess at all.

    Good Luck!
