Re: The DIY Grinder Timer Box Project
All methods of measuring dose [Weight, Volumetric, Timing etc] are subject to variances such as bean type/age, humidity & grind setting.
Weighing is probably the most accurate
Timing is probably the most elegant/coolest solution
Volumetric is the simplest.
Get a cup and mark the optimun fill point or use a 200ml measuring cup. Fill that and tip it into your empty grinder
It aint perfect but its close and quick.

Re: The DIY Grinder Timer Box Project

Re: The DIY Grinder Timer Box Project
Well,
Theres this type -
able to switch up to 750W; or this one -
able to switch up to 2,000W, and if youre feeling particularly geeky, you could make your own from an old microwave front panel as per this one from an old Silicon Chip Magazine edition.
You sometimes see the DR Timers going quite cheaply on evilbay now and again, theres a couple there right now....

Re: The DIY Grinder Timer Box Project
Ive seen that...and thought about it...it looks very costly for that electronic darkroom timer.
Analog timers work just as well.

It would seem darkroom timers are the way to go. The price can be inhibitive though.
Ive lifted the photo from Temes blog Espresso Passione.

Or you can buy a cheap digital scale and weigh each grind. It doesnt take but a few seconds. Most importantly though, no beans are left sitting in the hopper going stale.

yep. It will not be a "perfect" solution, but it will hopefully be a good starting point for domestic systems.

Something to keep in mind, every time you adjust the grind the time will need to be changed.

The DIY Grinder Timer Box Project
Ok, ive been sitting on this idea for a little while, but its finally bugged me to the point that i want to do something about it: I am incapable of grinding the precise amount of coffee every time. I just cannot do it. Ive been assessing my solutions. Weighing up the perfect amount to grind every time i pull a shot? Too time consuming. Using the gaggia MDF "doser"? nowhere near precise enough.
So, I have come to the conclusion that there is only 1 way to go: I need to find or build a timing circuit that i can use parallel to the existing grind switch in order to ensure that i get exactly the same amount of coffee grind every time.
Specs?
needs to be powered by 240VAC;
needs to be able to drive a decent load (will need the ammeter to check how much current the grinder pulls - will probably need an ssr);
need to be able to adjust the timer as required (pot with a knob)
need to be able to override the timer for "just a little bit more" when setting the thing up (hence parallel with the existing switch)
Put simply, i want a little box with a soft touch button that i can press once that will set off the grinder for a period of time that i can adjust, and at the end i will have exactly the same amount of coffee grounds as i had last time, and will have next time.
Being home to a small crew of dedicated modders, i though this would be a good place to post my general idea, and hopefully with the help of the more knowledgable types i might be able to get this idea off the ground.
So, please, your help is greatly appreciated
