    Hi coffee gurus! Not many posts from me but I have lurked the "snobs" forum for a while with interest.

    This thread is awesome! Doesn't quite fix my problem but I was wondering if anyone had any clues...

    My EM0480 has gone well for a few years so I really can't complain however,
    I have recently replaced the burr's and now it doesn't seem to grind under load.
    When disassembled and powered it spins fine and looks all good but when the beans are in, the shaft makes the noise but is not spinning!
    Is it possible the shaft can disengage with the motor when under load? Slipping maybe?

    I am way out of warranty so might just have to spend the time stripping it down for a look. I would appreciate any advice.

    I might search "new grinder" in the meantime! *ha ha*

    Hello Everyone I have a EM0480 grinder with the wobbly shaft described here. I would like to modify my grinder as mentioned in this thread and would like to know if anyone has any spare bushes of the dimensions described here or direct me to where I could possibly get some made. Many places can only make those if the order is for a few thousand, but no one would be willing to make a few. Your help is much appreciated.

    Acetal with migratory lubricant

    i just pulled the grinder right down to the seal - looks good for the mod.
    This looks very much like the Acetal copolymer with migratory lubricant I used to use back in the late '70s in my small plactics injection moulding plant back in NZ. Excellent for very long term usage if not at high rotation (which would cause it to overheat and start to soften). We used it for sail slides and other uses to stop small products sticking - probably ideal for sliders for screen doors, etc.

    The lubricant is put in during manufacture of the plastic raw material, and continues to migrate to the surface until there is no more - expect that this would take years in continuous use, forever in an occasional use like the grinder.

    I purchased my supplies back then from Hoechst, a German manufacturer. Brand was Celcon, or Celanese.

    FWIW, I have had my 0480 for many years, and it still functions flawlessly, no slop in the shaft or burr, and a grind setting between 12-15 for my triple basket. No channeling, no problems.

    I guess it is because I regularly clean it, and it's lasted well.

    I must be the anomaly. I would be keen to explore a stepless mod on the dodgy one my parents have...

    HI all,

    Managed to get a Nylon bush made for my EM0480 recently. The unit was overdue for a good clean out and is going great now and also producing some really fine grinds. Anyway if anyone is interested I will put the measurements below.

    Measured with digital caliper.

    Thickness = 3.20mm
    OD = 17.20
    ID = 12.04

    Shaft I believe is 12 mm so a slight clearance is preferred. Ideally you don't want the bush turning with the shaft as it will wear the outer rim. Once it beds in the bush should be stationary in the space provided.

    Its a push fit and is working fine, no burning or smell coming from the bush at all. Just make sure who ever turns it up that it has no burrs on the material internally or externally. When I put it together now I find I may have to remove one of the shims as there is less lateral movement in the shaft now and grinds quite fine.

    Good luck

    Thanks so much for this Ray! I've just modified my Sunbeam grinder with a thicker washer I found in the old man's shed...so far so good, now I just have to play with the grind settings for a perfect coffee...oh and I hate wasting good coffee beans so looks like it's more coffee for me today!!

    Cheers,

    PS this is my first post so thanks for making it a happy one!!

    I started off with a setting of around 15 and am now down to 8.
    Sounds like either wear and tear or incorrectly seated in the first place.

    Are Sunbeam still sending out shims?
    AFAIK

    Also with the top burr Ive noticed that it kind of screws in anti-clockwise to the holder assembly before replacing the whole thing on the machine, does that sound right?
    No.

    If I merely align the whit dots it doesnt really seem to fit in place firmly.
    What do you mean by firmly? Its either seated or not.

    Have you tried aligning the dots 180 degrees the other way?

    (I sold my 0450 a while ago so the above answers are  from memory)

    *bump*

    Hey all.

    I bought one of these guys a couple of months back and was wondering how many of the reported issues Sunbeam has actually addressed. I started off with a setting of around 15 and am now down to 8. Are Sunbeam still sending out shims? Hey everyone! Im yet another person inspired to register with the site due to the great stuff going on in this thread. Now to my question:

    I have access to a decent workshop with lathes etc. and am keen to make one of the bushes for my EM0450, however Im not sure what dimensions I should make it. I know Ray said that the diameters are about 10.5mm ID and 17.5 OD, but what about the thickness?

    Does anyone have one of the ones that Ray kindly shipped out and access to a set of callipers to give an accurate measurement?

    That looks like the top burr isnt seated right, it has to be just right. It sits up if you dont push it down hard before you turn the top back around.
    Brilliant! that was it! I just had to take out the top burr, move the grind ring around to the arrow, reseat the top burr and turn the grind ring back. Thanks alot chris, you saved me a drama!

    Hi Guys, first post for me.  I just bought an EM0480 and thought this cant be right, on the finest setting the thing was hopeless and I felt there were probably some answers out there in forum world.  So big thanks to all the contributors here because it would seem the answers were in fact right here.  I still dont know about me doing a full Ray C mod but I can probably manage a washer or 2, but is it worth it?  I can go get a different machine but will I be sorry (keep in mind I would be getting a cheaper more basic grinder and will keep my current system of  grinding by look and feel)

    thanks guys.
    Id take it back to the store and get a replacement.
    Youll see in the instruction book that an espresso grind should be around the 13 mark IIRC.
    A properly working 0480 shouldnt need the washer mod.

    after pulling the grinder down i realise now how much grind gets stuck in the shoot. i only ever put enough beans in the hopper to grind as i need it (and store the rest in an air tight dark container). so after every shot, i make sure there are no beans/grind left and use a toothbrush to pull the grind out that is stuck in the shoot. not a fan of leaving woolworths grade stale grind in there!

    on another topic - just used high quality milk this morning (as opposed to the no frills) - hello latte art!

    Update: I grind on 11 with most beans after adding both spacers/washers to the recently purchased grinder. So far its been good - although even with a piece of PVC elbow piping on the nossle I still make some mess - but alot less than before.
