  • Noisy Macap M4

I just bought a Macap M4 a few days ago and have found that it seems to be excessively noisy. After unboxing I pluged it in and switched it on just to give it a quick test with no beans in it and was very surprised at how noisy it was.

From the reviews I have read on it, it has been described as very quiet when run without beans in the hopper. I think I remember one reviewer describing it as a quiet hum. My grinder makes anything but a quiet hum. More of a loud buzz.

The noise seems to be mostly comming from the vibration of the doser and especially the lid on the doser. You can see the lid jumping around. Even with the lid off it is quite loud. If I take the lid off and cup both my hands around the doser to absorb the vibration it quietens down to a low hum as I expected the grinder to sound.

Has anyone else found this with their Macap M4/M5 grinder?

I am concerned there is a fault with the grinder causing it to run unbalanced, creating excessive vibration and that it might get worse over time and cause wear.

Ive found my M5 to be very quiet when humming without beans and not really too loud with beans.

The lids for the hopper and the doser dont noticeably make noise on mine.

Perhaps your dose adjustment screw is loose or some other part around the doser?

Have you put coffee through it yet?

Do you have a previous grinder you are comparing the noise to?

I have an M4 and when it has no beans in it there is only the quietest of humming noises. There is little or no vibration in the doser, in fact the doser is solid as a rock. It makes a lot more noise when grinding but still a lot less than my old Delonghi.

Doesnt sound like everything is right with your grinder......

        Re: Noisy Macap M4

I have checked everywhere in and around the doser for loose screws and found none. The whole doser vibrates very very noticeably, which is causing all the noise. Especially if the lid is on which jumps around making a racket.

Compared to my Rocky grinder the M4 is very noisy when running with no beans. but I am assuming this is because of the abnormal (I am guessing it is abnormal anyway) vibration of the grinder.

I have put some beans through it and it appears to grind ok. But I am concerned the vibration could be caused by a missallined grinding bur causing inconsistent grind and also wear on bearings etc. The noise is also irritating.

It sounds like there is indeed something wrong with this grinder. I am still awaiting a response from the seller on this issue(Coffeesnobs sponsor).

          Definitely doesnt sound right.
Mine hums when empty; no vibrating doser.

My M4 is very quiet without beans (I dont notice it is on once the beans have run out!)

HOWEVER, I have had a vibration in the doser like you describe. It comes and goes and I only really noticed it happening once or twice - but very much like you described.

              Re: Noisy Macap M4

              Hi Matt,

Im sorry your grinder may have a fault.

I suggest that you check that the blades are not in contact- Its quite possible that you would get the symptoms (and huge blade wear as well) you have described. This can occur when there is confusion as to which direction of collar movement is which.

A good rule of thumb is to make the grind finer until the blades are in contact with each other and then coarsen the grind until you achieve 1/4 full turn at the collar- i.e a heap of turns on the micrometric adjustment. DO THIS WITH THE GRINDER SWITCHED OFF. At that point, you can fill the grinder and make fine adjustments of grind once you see whats happening with your espresso.

Should you do this and feel that there is still an issue, it will be our pleasure to check the grinder for you.

              regards

              Chris

Just a quick (dumb) question Chris.

How do you know when the blades are in contact? Ive heard that it is obvious, but can you see them touching or is it when the adjustment wont go any finer?

Yes Matt, you will feel resistance on the drive- and stop adjusting at that point.

Feel free to buzz me to clarify...

                  regards

                    Re: Noisy Macap M4

I was about to box the grinder back up ready for shiping back to Chris today for him to check out when I had a thought... I had taken the finger guard out off the doser when setting the grinder up after unpacking so that I could easily clean the old grinds out of the doser and chute each day.

So I put the finger guard back in and turned it on and sure enough it is noticably quieter. The lid still rattles around on the doser, but not as much as before and without the lid on it is pretty quiet, only a slight buzz from the doser where as before it was a loud buzz and the lid was virtually trying to jump off.

A good majority of the user reviews I read about the M4/M5 said they removed the finger guard for the same reason I did and I dont recall any of them mentioning an increase in noise after doing so.

The grinder is still noisier then I would think it should be considering the lid does still rattle around, but it is much more tollerable now then it was without the finger guard in the doser. My problem though is that it is difficult to clean out the old coffee grinds from the doser and in particular the grind chute with the guard in place and I realy think the guard is of little use other then to help stop the doser from vibrating as it seems to brace it somewhat.

Has anyone here removed the guard and is your grinder still whisper quiet when no beans are grinding?

Yep - doser finger guard removed and M4 is whisper quiet (except for one or two times it vibrated)

No guard. Always no more than a gentle hum when empty.

Also no finger guard and no noise when empty. Also my doser lid fits nice and snug and doesnt rattle at all... mind you I usually grind with the doser lid off so I can scape the coffee level in the portafilter with a knife back into the doser.

                              Gday,

I too upgraded from a Rocky to a Macap (M5).
I found the noise level to be fairly close between the two grinders when not grinding, though the Macap seemed more quiet when grinding. The Macap also seemed to produce a more *solid* sound when grinding, as if it were treating the beans with a contemptuous snarl when grinding them down (though this may be giving the Macap a little too much personality on my part ;D )

I removed the finger guard, seemed little or no change in the noise level when grinding or not.

I have found that when I remove and replace the hooper for cleaning that the Macap can be a touch more noisy, though that is always a result of me not securing the hopper correctly. A quick push down on the hopper and a tightening of the lock screw and its back to a gentle hum or contemptuous snarl (when grinding) ..

                              Regards,
                              BeanBrat
