      WOW, JB, what a purchase!!
i saw that one, and was thinking.... mmm.... but then i looked at Rob and thought i d better not push my luck any further!!

i am soo intrigued by the way it grinds, with the 2 sets of burrs, that must deliver just-about micrometre precise grinds!!

bugger, and now we are over here, and you are over there, and i cannot see it in action...
make us video, WITH sound.. ??

      have lots of fun, JB,

      cheers,
      L

        Great stuff JavaB

Sorta sounds like the offspring of your LC-Junior and a Versalab.

I too, wll be really interested to get your comparison notes: a side by side review, plus photos, its the least we expect!!!!

Have I not read before, you saying, that youll never need to upgrade?

Eh.... well.... yep I have said that :-[

But I guess I lied...... there is always something better just to tempt you to spend a few more dollars....

          Now where can I get a good, pre-loved Synesso at a bargain price : : :

Maybe I just dont get how this posting works, but hey, I did get two replies!
So, thanks JavaB for the info on the Microcimbali. Im planning on purchasing this machine, if, after the store gives me lessons on its use, I feel confident to pull some shots. Ill have some good questions for the sales rep thanks to you.

              Re: Grinder upgrade time!

              Ok.... Im excited....

After a couple of weeks overhauling the DRM (whilst making tampers for the Christmas rush!!) Ive just enjoyed my first espresso from the new beasie.... and Ive got to agree with David Schomer .... it does make a difference to the flavour in the cup..... a very pleasant difference.

For those not familiar with the conical/flat burr set, this grinder uses the same burr set as the versalab m3..... or should I say the versalab m3 uses the DRM burr set.

The conical burr does the bean breaking and the flat burr set does the medium and fine grinding..... so the path through the burrs is a lot longer and the rate of reduction in size is much slower (and the burr set only rotates at 360 rpm). It produces output at about 70% of the rate of the LC Jnr - so a bit slower.

The flat burrs are a totally different design to those in normal flat burred grinders - no bean breaking area (normally a third - or more - of the burr) and the throat is much smaller (as the beans have already been "broken").

So what does this mean in the cup? Well Ive just dialled it in.... and this is my first espresso.... but smoother more rounded taste and more subtle flavours come through better (and cleaner?)..... very nice!!!

The grind also appears to be coarser than the LC Jnr for the same pour time (and it is dialed to a higher number from the reference - burrs touching - then the LC Jnr.... and both grinders are exactly the same pitch thread.... so that agrees....

Will post some more test results and some happy snaps latter (when I can get some more time)

Now Im just going to enjoy my espressos

And one last thing - it is one of the quietest grinders Ive ever heard.... with or without beans being ground.... it is almost impossible to hear the end of the grinding (I use measured amounts of beans for each pour)

                Re: Grinder upgrade time!

Good news JavaB. Not only a new toy to play with -- but one which produces tangible (or should that be tasteful) improved results. The pics will be a helpful aid in understanding the conical/flar configuration.

Enjoy the well-earned fruits of your labour.

Happy days ahead grinding away JB (On Demand of course ). It is indeed a lovely looking piece of machinery. Heres some interesting pics, along with informative overviews:

Of course I always "GrindOnDemand"... except when I have a large group that Im making coffee for.... then beans in the hopper and fill the doser..... but that is the only time!

The other interesting thing..... with the La Cimbali Jnr - 21 grams in the Synesso double just touched the showerscreen... the grinds from this grinder pack much closer (hence the need for the coarser grind I guess)... and I reckon I could get 24 grams in the basket before touching the showerscreen

And the onset of blonding is also pushed further out....

I must say this will be my last grinder ever...... its output quality has been compared favourably to the Kony.... but at only 450mm.... will easily fit under the bench cabinets (compared to the Konys 620mm)

Last Grinder? I dont think so. Youve said that about upgrade ;D. When the "upgrade bug" crawls again, you know :P

Hi TommyLeeJones and welcome to CS.

Yep, I know the upgrade bug is hard to resist..... but in this case there is little to upgrade to. A K10WBC or Kony might give slightly better results but are FAR too big (height) to fit into the kitchen......

The only other reason would be if it failed - and as it has brand new burrs and is so solidly built - it will outlast me!

So Im pretty safe this time (I think!).

                            Re: Grinder upgrade time!

Cimbali have made a new Hybrid grinder with both conical and flat burrs a mix of the Max and Junior grinders. Only available in USA though. http://www.chriscoffee.com/products/...ders/maxhybrid.

Also a great thread leading up to the production of the Hybrid Cimbali http://www.home-barista.com/forums/l...-t3147-40.html

                              trumboli,

                              Yep, seen that grinder before....

It is similar to the DRM/Cimbali I have but they only use 64mm planar burrs (mine has 68mm) and they are direct drive (1400rpm compared to 360rpm for mine)....

Probably an interesting grinder none the less -- but IMHO it would be FAR better if they had the slower speed grinding like my grinder and all the top conicals do (Mazzer Robur etc)..... however I guess gear/belt reductions are expensive.... and so they opted for direct drive on that model - sadly

Yeah JavaB you are right on both counts. I got a bit excited after seeing the Hybrid that I didnt straight away compare it exacty with your specs. He who in haste is lost!
