  • Modded Rocky - stepless and its a beauty

Ok I looked at the stepless mod at http://www.angelfire.com/pro2/panroa...lessrocky.html I got 6mm black hose and cut it to size and then down the centre and after doing a clean of Rocky I fitted it and replaced the hopper. I noticed that the hopper required a firm even press to get it past the 6mm hose (which BTW looks like it belongs there (shiny) and by the time if screwed down the 3 hopper screws in the top carrier the hopper was so firm that it didnt need hose clamps to press the case in onto the hopper. I find that to turn the hopper a firm hand is required. I stuck a small piece of pipe offcut into the adjustment pin flap to allow adjustment without having to depress the flap.

I found that adjustments of about a fifth of the usual adjustment on Rocky is readily available and easy to achieve. The hopper creeps less than a mm with firm pressure. I was concerned that it might break friction and move too far, but it doesnt.

After this mod I dialed the Rocky in for a MUCH better result for my Yemen and am now pouring amazing shots. They take 30 seconds and the colour and consistency of the pour is really exciting. I have done 4 flat whites in a row and they are very clean, sweet and full of the body that I couldnt achieve before - it was either too slow to pour or too fast. I also noticed, as did my wife, that the Rocky was much quieter (burr plates not moving from side to side (even though its had comparatively little use over the last year or so) and the grind is more consistent in the basket.

I am stoked with this because it has all the benefits and no downside that I can see and its reversible within a couple of minutes. I thoroughly recommend it.

    Cheers all.

Fantastic result Oz, and like all the really effective modifications one can do, it is so simple. Might have to reconsider that upgrade, eh?

Mod sounds great, I will give it a try at the weekend!! Ive found with some beans that I need an adjustment between the Rocky settings, this should be ideal for this purpose.
where did you get the black hose from, is it rubber or plastic?

Its plastic hose mate - black and shiny on the outside surface with about 1mm wall thickness. Its the type that you see used for washer bottle to washer jets on cars. I got it from my brother who has a mech shop.

Gday Mal - I am wrapped in it and I will see how it goes over the next few months, but Im still going to keep a lookout for commercials because I would like one (!) and because I am toying with the idea (one day) of starting a coffee shop.

          Cheers mate.

Re: Modded Rocky - stepless and its a beauty

There are so many Rockys out there I feel there is a market for a commercial stepless mod if some one was to come up with one.

honestly...this mod is so simple is ridiculous - check out the pictures in the link, but minus the stainless hose clamp(s) that that fellow used....If I were to patent and sell the idea it would consist of a 10 inch bit of 6mm hose cut lengthwise and a set of instructions about 3 lines long.

              Cheers

Re: Modded Rocky - stepless and its a beauty

One thing I should add about the mod using 6mm pipe. It requires strong hands (plural) to turn it (and in turn means less than a mm movement each time is required) - which may not suit all people. If you are in doubt try getting 2 lengths of pipe - say one 6mm diameter and one 5mm to see what the difference it; I suspect, but dont know, that 5mm might then require the pipe clamps, but it may be worth a shot.

                Cheers

Have a look at the pictures in the link in ozscotts first post and mentally remove the big hose clamp. What is left is the tube mod.
The tube goes over the inside edge of the ss top cover on Rocky.

Re: Modded Rocky - stepless and its a beauty

I did the teflon tape/ stepless mod today on my rocky (work workhorse) and its changed the unit from a serious disappointment to a very nice grinder. I always found the Botticelli seemed a bit challenged with the Rocky- todays pours were thick and rich. Im not sure how much was more accurate dialling in from the stepless mod or how much from the much decreased sloppiness of fit.
                        Either way- what a difference!

Excellent mate - it does make a big difference and elevates the Rocky well beyond stock.

                          Cheers

Sorry I didnt see this post up earlier, but if anyone still wants photos I can take some and post...

Apologies for also bringing up a very old post but, are there any pictures to this mod? The url in the opening post is quite vague and it seems you were able to do this without the clamps. 6mm of any kind of tube? eBay link removed per site posting policy This was the closest I could find here in the UK, was wondering if this will do?

Mate I will take a photo this week. Essentially you undo the burrs/hopper and cut lengthways small diameter tubing and press over the sharp edge of the steelwork right around and then put the hopper back on...it will be an interference fit now with the tubing all around the void in the top of the case. Then press the adjustment button and stick a bean in there to keep it depressed then get a pin or similar and tape or glue it too the front of the machine to line up with adjustment ring or you want to get serious about exact adjustments. Stepless and won't move without you grasping it as the tubing grips well.

                              Cheers
