What about a foot operated switch?
    I know someone with one.
And how would one rig that up? Im no electrician!

How about a doser lever activated switch? I start thwacking when the beans have finished grinding and the thwacking switches off the grinding... you reckon this would be possible?

From a functionality point of view, would folks typically prefer manual vs timed/auto with Mini/SJ?
Given the location of my SJ, with the switch on the right butting right up against my Silvia, I did wonder whether a timer (and me not having to switch it off) would be more convenent. That being said, it really isnt very difficult creating a bit of space to reach my fat mitts between the two machines to switch it off!

Anyway, if I did have an option for a timered version, Id probably get it, but not at a price premium. That little bit of saved effort doesnt really justify any monetary cost IMHO.

    Ahh grasshopper,

Americans no longer get manual versions because they sue when they forget to turn the grinder off and the house gets messy or burns down...But then they also sue when they remove the finger guard from the dosing chamber, then turn the grinder on and then stick their fat mits in the throat of the grinder  :...

We Aussies are considered smart enough to switch a grinder off and keep our hands to ourselves....so the gods of Mazzer allow us to have manual versions...

Another case of what you read on the net not neccessarily being true for you

    Chris

I keep hearing about this awesome SJ price but havent been able to find the number anywhere. Anyone wanna let me know what I missed out on?
    Hi Sammus,

Talk Coffee did get on to a batch of Mazzers at $750 which was an awesome price. They were a bulk purchase Easter special offered by a supplier and as a one off. They were advertised in the hardware for sale thread : http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1207186647 with a few minis at a lower price as well. The thread has since closed.

    Regards

    Chris

I originally got my SJ from the bay of evilness to use with my BoEma 2 grp when making coffees for groups like my daughters school fair and calisthenics club. It quickly sent the Rocky to work where it gets to see service in a light capacity. Would I go back to something smaller nope the SJ is a beast and I think it will well and truly wear me out before I can wear it out.

Thanks Greg and Mal...looking forward to it. I think I will still end up doing the tape mod - wont take much (as per the Home Barista tape mod - either electrical or velcrove tape. Cheers again.

Dont really like to blow my own trumpet but the LSM Doser I have sweeps absolutely clean. There is not a single, solitary granule of coffee left behind and it really does seem to be designed from inception to do the job as effectively as possible. Im sure that there are other makes out there that do as good a job as the LSM but the Mazzer doesnt seem to be within cooee of it....

    Cheers,
    Mal.

I doubt its actually the doser. My Mini is a 99 build where the SJ is a 07 and I expect its a design change they made fairly recently, which presumably they deployed across all their dosers which all suffered the same problem. The Mini was brand new when I took delivery of it 12 months ago (had sat in a warehouse for a looong time!) and was like this out of the box.

Greg if Im reading that review correctly (the K3-v-Mini) at http://www.coffeetamper.com.au/**/reviews/mini-k3/#doser-guard, the Compak on the left has more grounds left under the vanes than the Mini on the right...?
Yep correct; but the Mini at that point was brand new and had yet to grind a bean. That photo was actually to compare finger guards not sweep quality but thats the only one I had readily available of the Compak Once they both got their burrs dirty the Mini quickly showed its particulate colours!

I did actually take photos of the doser floors on the Mini and the SJ and a whole lot of other stuff which are / were slated for the proper write-up; this was always only meant to be a bit of quick info to get the vitals out there, but since you asked... Mini on left, SJ on right. Note on the Mini where I removed a bit of the false floor on the doser : Does make quite a good seal eventually though and it tends to sweep quite clean once the live gasket has formed!

Thanks Greg - I had already committed to the SJ through Chris. I have the room and it suits my FAEMA Due A nicely. Thanks for taking the time to do the mini review matey.

    Cheers
And for the price that Chris was offering them for, its pretty darn hard to say no. In a home situation, an SJ is truly a life-long prospect and with what appears to be a superior doser to the Mini, its almost a "must have" in my book. Overkill for home use? For the average user, sure but for the likes of we CSers, no way [smiley=evil.gif].

Youll be extremely happy with your SJ OZ once you get your hot little hands on it. Between the SJ and the Dué, there will be no limits to the quality of shots you will be capable of producing, given all the usual provisos. Youll be in coffee nirvana mate 8-),

    Mal.
