Re: Buying a USED Mazzer SJ Grinder - advice please
are the burrs set up on the mazzer the same as the Rocky - ie you can let them touch without damage because its the flat outer edge that is touching and it cannot touch tooth on tooth?
Cheers

Re: Buying a USED Mazzer SJ Grinder - advice please
Without a doubt the best thread to appear for a long time .......
The best part was when the sale price was revealed - 250 kiwi......
Ive never seen so much angst placed into a decision making process for such little risk - brilliant.

Oh I had no problem with the insertion - I did it many timesOriginally posted by 76747870707E7964170 link=1226270246/94#94 date=1242214349Once you get the hang of inserting them, its very quick.
. I used an old business card as I couldnt get anything thineer to stay in place. I persisted with it for several months (including replacements).
I find the tape mod more reliable even if it does take more time initially.

Once you get the hang of inserting them, its very quick. If they fall out every couple of months, I can live with that. Simply redo a few more squares and replace them.
I actually used normal 80gsm paper covered on both sides with electrical tape, which makes them non-porous and just the right flexibility to I hope, stay put.

This was tried by Simone last year:Originally posted by 76747870707E7964170 link=1226270246/92#92 date=1242209686I cut 62.5cmx2.5cm squares from cardboard and slid them up into the doser veins from the chute.

I ended up doing the tape mod using duct tap which is better than electrical tape in my opinion

Re: Buying a USED Mazzer SJ Grinder - advice please
I modded the doser on my Mini the other day. Instead of doing the popular mod with electrical tape, I cut 6 2.5cmx2.5cm squares from cardboard and slid them up into the doser veins from the chute.
You need to lie the grinder on its back to access to dosers chute, but its quite simple. Less fiddly and IMO even more effective. Its also not effected by changing the height of the doser veins.

Re: Buying a USED Mazzer SJ Grinder - advice pleas
I did the tape sweeper mod this afternoon. I did it to the leading edge, not the trailing, to make sure the tape didnt get pushed off the vane. I did it more because I felt like tinkering than anything else. With mine, which has the newer and cleaner set up, before the mod what was left on the floor was so tiny that all gathered together I doubt it would have been more than half a Redhead matchhead...perhaps less again. But now there is none. Frankly if anyone could tell the difference in taste between pre and post the mod on mine (and any new one that sweeps very well) then they are superhuman!
Cheers

I would definitely take time to mod the doser. Makes all the difference for a clean sweep. All you need is a pair of scissors and electrical tape.
This thread reminds me of my used mazzer purchase. I remember the disappointment of the state of the grinder when it came and the satisfaction of the end result. Good times.

I doubt theyd wear. The mod is easy as. Take up the top dosing star, slide some plastic cars or whatever from a takeaway contained to fit, them replace the top dosing star, and bam, clean as you get. Theres plenty of mods on other sites as well as this site. Ive had my SJ for over a year now and havent changed the sweep mods since.

How "new" are we talking? Probably newer than my machine. Though I just wondered if these "wear" over time.

The newer SJs sweep very well as do the newer Minis I believe. Just search for SJ modification on Home Barista or Coffeegeek - cant remember which now has a full run down of the tape/velcro mod.

Re: Buying a USED Mazzer SJ Grinder - advice pleas
Ok time to start getting nit picky.
I was led to believe that the SJ doser sweeps cleaner than a Mini.
But my doser is terrible at leaving grinds.
Is this due to the age of the machine/doser? Or is it a known issue with the SJ? What are the best reversible mods to fix this issue?
