Re: Time for a new EM0480???

Not just baristas and mechanics (and I have used this workshop for 30 years), but almost any profession could be classified the same way.

My father used to follow his bank manager around whenever he was moved to a new branch.

I used to make the odd trip back to an old eatery for lunch when Id moved locations.

Dad (again) used to own a cafe in Sth Grafton 45 years ago, people used to plan their trips so as to be able to pop in for a meal.

    Service is the key.

Falcons are well known for their head bolt issues being single use. Bad miss there I am a mechanic by trade and have been off the tools for 3 or 4 years so not like it is a new problem. Unfortunately the motor industry trys to pull the wool over the customers eyes. But in the process shoot themselves in the foot. Which is where coffee and motor industry are similar, find good barista/mechanic and a reputation will be built and customers will flood in. But stuff up and give a bad service it all goes downhill fast. Most people would be prepared to pay a little more for good service as well. Quality control is a big issue and can make or break a business.

As an auditor I understand "causal factor" and answered seriously in case that was your intention.

I noticed FC took it the other way and thats fine too.

Unfortunately for my mechanics Im not a typical customer that has no idea.

I now choose to pay someone to do the dirty work, but have helped strip and rebuild a motor in my younger days.

I can can tell the difference between when the appentice has touched the car and when not.
That keeps them on their toes.

Its like when a good barista shouldnt send out a bad coffee but should redo the shot.
My guys are getting to learn its best to serve me up a good result rather than have me send it back. :P

One head bolt was found to have snapped.
Inspection of the previous paperwork showed that all parts had been invoiced for except new headbolts.
    New headbolts are a must.
So they couldnt prove they had done a proper job and had to fix for nix.
    Gday TG,

My response wasnt meant to be taken seriously, just a friendly dig and very much tongue in cheek :P. FC knew where I was coming from ;D,

Obviously getting off topic but is the car with the head gasket a falcon by any chance? Just a mechanics punt not a battle of ford versus holden on this occassion.

Almost forgot, head gasket repaired for free as I expected.
    Ahhh,

But what about the causal factor :-?..... Head Gaskets dont just blow for no reason either, might have a warped interface between head and block :P,

    Hmmm? :-?

I dunno.... When I got my Rocky, just unpacked it, made sure there was no packing material anywhere that it shouldnt have been, set the grind to roughly where I estimated would do the job, pulled a few shots while fine-tuning the setting and then Bobs your uncle or aunt or whatever.... A 25-28 second shot of pure bliss. And its been that way for more than two years now, with a bit of a clean now and again but the grind setting is still in the same median now that it was when I first dialled it in 8-). End of story.....

Re: Time for a new EM0480???

If you can get it exchanged on the basis it no longer grinds satisfactorily, I suppose you might as well go ahead and get a shiny new grinder. Itll make you feel a lot better and you wont regret it. However, like all things, the grinder wont stay shiny and new, and it also wont grind like a new EM0480 for very long either. As someone who did the above, I found my previous problem had returned after a mere couple of weeks! I guess thats how long it takes for the burrs to set into what is their fully seated, stable position.

Does this make the grinder a bad grinder? I dont think so. As discussed in the "Sunbeam EM0480, Review" thread, there are several ways to counter the increased coarseness. In my opinion the best method is what I, and a couple of other people have done, creating a durable washer or spacer (mine was cut from a tough-looking ice cream container) to sit on top of the upper burr, forcing it closer to the lower burr. This not only offsets the grind finer, but should provide additional protection to the underside of the upper burr carriers plastic ridge, which is exposed (at points) to substantial traffic of moving bean shards that may eventually cause substantial wear.

After installing the spacer into my grinder, I couldn’t be happier with its performance. I went from grinding for espresso at 2, to what’s settled on an even 20, and has remained very consistent at this setting. Initially I was worried that I could no longer grind for frenchpress, but thanks to the ‘hidden steps’ that lie outside the marked range, I am able to do this after all.

Oh and regarding voiding the warranty with this mod, it is totally reversible and will leave no evidence. Of course there’s the moral dilemma, having technically voided the warranty... but each to their own I guess

On top of the written warranty theres the "statutory warranty".
This is where the "fit for purpose" expression comes in.
Consumer Affairs and Fair Trading will explain that generally the more you pay for something the longer it is expected to last.

Recently I had my car in for service and the new manager told me that there was a head gasket leak.
I wasnt very happy as the car had the same problem last year.
Turns out it was 15 months ago and the head specialist my repair shop sent the car to was denying liability as it was outside the "12 month warranty" on the work performed.

So I pressed them with their obligations under the statutory warranty.
Something that breaks down just outside the warranty period is not on, hence the retailer is fair game for the consumer to pursue.
If they try fob you off saying its the manufacturers responsibility, dont fall for that.
Your contract is with the retailer.
They have their own contact with their supplier and can take it up with them after they deal with you.

Your own states Consumer Affairs or Fair Trading offices or websites are a wealth of information regarding where you stand with warranties.

    5yr waranty on the motor....
    Krusty...

Id read the fine print on that one! If you saw the Choice expose on large screen TVs where people had either been given, or purchased, additional warranty. The unit has failed only a fraction of time into the warranty and they have been told it can no longer be repaired - Sorry...

There is apparently a clause in many "brand name" warranties now which states something like "only valid whilst spares are available" !! Needless to say- the customers were not very happy (nor were Choice editors).

i could not exchange it, i could just keep grinding at 2... why does it really matter, i grind the same beans, if i have to go to 1, thats no big deal either
Yes, but that shouldnt happen... it should continue to function as it did when you bought it (well slowly deteriorate over time - but not that fast!!) Soon it will no longer serve the purpose for which it was purchased - requiring a mod..... and that shouldnt be the case with any item which is sold! I say again - it is not fit for the purpose for which it was sold.

so, it doesnt require a mod to work, but like all the other mods out there (rocky mod, silvia mod) it is done to make it more reliable, and better suited to snobs like us.
Ah that isnt comparing apples and apples!!

The rocky will continue to work the same as it did the day it was purchased, so will the Silvia and all the other items we Coffee Snobs mod.... They are not modded so they continue to work as they once did.... they are modded to enhance their performance...

If you bought a new car you wouldnt expect to have to continually fit new bits to keep it working - except for the consumables which must be changed.

The car must continue to run, consuming about the same amount of fuel per 100Km, nothing falling off or loosing power etc - if it does it is not fit for the purpose for which it was sold. You want to fit a bigger motor so it will go faster - fine, larger brakes so it will stop faster - also fine (these are things YOU have decided to do.... not been forced to because the original item had a design fault!)

Increasing manufacturers of consumer items see them as disposable.... thats fine if it is some reasonable time in the future.... but that is not always the case! :-/

EDIT: And as F.C. says above.... if modified (or even opened) you void your warranty... With a product of this level of reliability - is that something you want to do! :-[

Re: Time for a new EM0480???

No worries, each to their own but in my extensive experience as a coffee equipment importer / trader my honest opinion follows:

The 5 year warranty on motor is misleading advertising.....it will be the last thing to ever go in the grinder and is like guaranteeing that your hills hoist will still be standing  in 50 years time......its irrelevant in real terms and simply states the obvious.

What really does matter is the amount of change in the scale of adjustment that your grinder seems to have varied by in only 7 months or less of use. I wouldnt call this "7+ months of perfectly fine grinding..."

This is not normal and for small the amount of coffee that a domestic user would put through the grinder in such a short period, indicates a real problem.

I will reiterate...you should not need to "mod" something to get it to work properly, and with respect to the reference to mods made to other equipment such as rocky/silvia, I will add that if a client brings me a Rocky or Silvia (we import them) with a problem during the warranty period, and we conclude they been "moded" or that the client has been into them, the warranty will be void. After warranty, the client can mod all they like and I think most would find this a prefectly reasonable attitude.

The scale on your grinder should not be shifting like this and the best advice I can give is that it should be referred to the place of purchase for attention before it runs out of warranty.................unless of course the reason for the large fluctuation in grind setting is that the coffee beans used now have a vastly different density/oil content to those being used when the setting was on 6.....

    Hope this helps.

    Regardz,
    FC.

5yr waranty on the motor.... 7+ months of perfectly fine grinding, and it is still ginding away, still getting 25sec pours from my minore..... i could not exchange it, i could just keep grinding at 2... why does it really matter, i grind the same beans, if i have to go to 1, thats no big deal either.
its only due to this site that i considered taking it back.....
