  • Purchase of new Rocky grinder.

    Hi everyone,
I got my silvia and now i want to get the rocky. Can anybody give me some advice on the doser v doserless. And also let me know the best place to purchase it in Brisbane southside.

    Thanks to everyone in advance.

Congratulations on the Silvia, and welcome to CoffeeSnobs.

There are a number of threads on doser vs doserless here. May I suggest a search and then you can read a lot of opinions and reasons quickly. There is a major poll of this question at the top of the Grinders section.

I would suggest trying before you buy. I bought a Mazzer Mini with doser buthad there been a doeserless version at the same price, I would probably have got that.

When I purchased my Rocky the research I did was fairly unanimous that the Rocky doser was not very robust and going doserless was a better option, I have no problems with my doserless Rocky, I grind into a container and then distribute the grinds into pf over my knockbox thus having no mess.

If you have to buy a rocky, I would definitely get the doserless model; when I tried the dosered model, it felt very plasticky, not at all robust and it didnt look like it would do a good job sweeping the chamber clean, as the dosing star seemed to be a fair bit above the bottom of the chamber.

Frankly, though, I cant see that the rocky is a good buy new any more. The steps are far enough apart that you will want better adjustment when you get confident with your espresso. I think that the cheaper and more expensive alternatives offer better value. The more expensive Compak K-3 touch is like a stepless rocky, but with bigger burrs and stepless grind adjustment, whilst the cheaper iberital challenge offers stepless grind adjustment and pretty good grind quality for espresso.

          Cheers,

          Luca

See any number of the sponsors as to when it comes to buying.. Veneziano Caffe is at West end and I am sure there are one or two others around.

            If you go the Rocky...

            1: NO doser..

2: Some simple mods can give you slightly better control

Other than that what Luca said..

If you think you may upgrade your coffee machine in the next year or two... Think hard about getting a better grinder..

If not you will be happy with the rocky and can sell both as a package when you move up.

I agree with Luca on this one. If you have the space and can extend yourself to a Compak K3T over the Rocky, do it....

Its well worth the extra expense and I still dont believe that the Mazzer mini-e at twice the price is a better grinder....

Re: Purchase of new Rocky grinder.

Hold on crew...with a 50 cent piece of pvc tubing and a green bean under the adjustment button you can have infinite adjustment AND no carrier play...really an excellent (and bullet proof) grinder at that price...that mod is so easy its ridiculous and with black tube against black its virtually unseen...I dont know why that isnt mentioned. I can understand not advising to mod some things or in some ways, but this is really so simple and the arguments about lack of fine adjustment go out the window.

                Cheers

PS. Just search on this site for the tube mod

Ozscott - Dont forget the teflon tape mod as well..

I have all but the green bean done to mine.. The bean is not required as the wife and kids like to know exactly where they are....

Also the Click Clack lide to ensure you get all the grinds out..

If they have not been thrashed, a second hand one can be had at a good price and a few mods make a great grinder... If your that way inclined..

                      Thank you all so much.
I will look at both the rocky and the K3t.

Re: Purchase of new Rocky grinder.

Spend the extra $100 on the K3T as then you wont need to upgrade again. I recently went the mazzer mini as I wanted a doser, and was close to getting a rocky or Bezerra, but they seem like the next step up, not so much the final step. The Mazzer feels like the final step, and I would have gotten the Compak K3E if I could have knocked off $100 on the mazzer price (stupid exchange rates!). If youre getting doserless, theres not much that beats the K3T for price/quality. Youd have to spend at least double to get better, and then it may only be a marginal improvement. The rocky seems like you might be hankering for an upgrade in a year or two, or you have to mod it to make it stepless. Either way, if you can stretch it for the K3T, I would. My 2c...
