  • Manual Grinder or Electronic...?

Do any CSers here use a manual grinder?

Would anyone recommend 1 over getting an electronic one?

I am in the market to buy a grinder and am wondering which would be better. I was interested in the EM0480 or the Nemox Lux but then in a thread here somewhere someone mentioned using a bit of elbow grease instead... Now Im curious...

Comes down to how many coffees you intend to make and how often... It also depends on what type of grinds you want and the ability to change grind size.

Mind you a good hand grinder, is not always cheep but some of the cheep ones can do a reasonable job.

As AM said depends on the amount of coffees you want to make. Lots of people here have manual grinders but usually as well as electric. I use mine for Aeropress (Plunger) and make just one coffee, takes about one minute to grind. The finer you adjust it the longer you spend grinding.

      Enjoy !

        Ah! Of course...
So I guess it wouldnt be ideal in my case then. I usually want to make a morning coffee and then shoot off to work. So time is precious...

Does either of the sunbeam or the Nemox have an issue with left over grinds that need constant cleaning?

Any other brand suggestions under $350?

All grinders do to some extent... You have to mod some to be able to get around this issue..

Really? Mod hey? I spose theres a thread on this forum somewhere that explains that.

            What grinder would you recommend?

1: The best you can afford and then add 20%

I use a Rocky as I can use a Click Clack lid to flush the large majority of my beans/grinds out.

However, it does have a few draw backs.. Like most things in life...

Do some reading in the grinder section as to cleaning / mods etc etc.. There is lots there and most of us will fully support point 1: above... However, we will also not be in agreement as to which one is the best.. Depends on you needs etc... Not just Wants ;D

                Re: Manual Grinder or Electronic...?

Definitely not a manual grinder for an espresso grind I have tried a couple I own and when set fine they are slow and a bit inconsistent for good results. For Plunger, Syphon, Aeropress or stove tops manual grinders are fine and take as long as the kettle takes to boil to grind.

For a good one under the $350 range Ascaso I mini, Ibiteral Challenge are a couple of good ones also a modded Sunbeam 480 for under $200 is OK. Either that or stretch it a little and go for the Rocky (search for Rocky steppless mod) circa $4-450.

There is no correct answer BTW but spend as much as the budget will allow and it will do you for longer with a better result.

The Sunbeam does leave a fair amount of grinds in the unit, however, a quick brush up the spout (using the provided brush) every morning gets most of it out and a clean of the burrs after each hopper full keeps the machine in good shape.
