    Re: Clean your grinder!

i have a Carimali grinder which i try to clean regularly... but generally persuasive as i may be, i can not get the lower burr carrier off the spindle.
i tried a lot of things, from lubricants to gentle heat, but the thing wont budge.
i cannot lever it off either: tried that too and the amount of force i applied would have been at the upper limit before running the risk of distorting the burr carrier, which is made of ( soft) brass.
so, i clean it above the burr carrier and then use a variety of short bamboo sticks, cotton buds, paint brushes etc to scrape as much of the crud from under the burr carrier, all the time working through the grinds chute.
troublesome, but reasonably effective... and at least i end up with the feeling that i did my best to clean it

nevertheless, if anyone can point me in a new direction as far as trying to get the stubborn thing off, feel free!

I have some spots on the doser of the Macap.
    Probably splashed milk.

    Any suggestions for removing it?
Ive no idea if this would work, but have you tried putting the affected bits under the steam wand of your coffee machine to steam the dried milk off? Might need to make your steam wet though.

Yeah...there could always be the possibility of weevils in the oats, which may make for some strange tasting, non-vegetarian coffee! I will continue to take apart and enjoy the time spent with my grinder...

I heard that you can clean a grinder by running oats through it. Does anyone know if this is true??
    I wouldnt!
Unless you want bits of oats all over the internals as well.

There is a product called Grindz that is designed to put through a grinder as a cleaning aid, but I still believe the best way to clean is to at least get the top burr off and get in there.

Some use vacuum cleaners or compressed air to assist. Personally, I use a dustbuster with some small attachments to help out.

Personally, the only thing I ever want to run through my coffee grinder, is coffee.

    Brett.

Ill try a few of those suggestions and see how I go.

I did buy a SS cleaner the other day, as suggested by someone at Cafebiz that had a Macap on display, but it hasnt worked.

Ill point out that the spots are on the metal part of the doser.

    Wet the milk stain by
    1) Pressing a hot damp sponge or microfibre cloth to soften the milk
    2) Wipe off gently with the hot but squeezed microfibre cloth

    Easy as

Try Autosol plastic polish. Specifically for plastics, even takes opaque plastic car headlights back to clear without scratching.

You would only need the tiniest application to get rid of it.
