  • EM 0450 vs EM 0480 ? is the price difference worth it ??

Hi all, I have read with great interest all the discussion on the EM 0480 grinder and its pros/cons. My question is about the comparison between the above mentioned Grinders. One thread has suggested that internally they are actually IDENTICAL - is that true ? Will you get a better grind from one or other ?? ( isnt that the most critical thing afterall ).
p.s. after reading various threads here I would actually like a Rocky but WAY over my buget. Awaiting you thoughts with interest.
    Cheers

The 450/480 are the same grinder with the 480 have a flashier body but the burrs are identical.
If you can stretch it to a Rocky (maybe 2nd hand) Id go for that option, if not the Sunbeam does a pretty good job. Upgraditis is always lurking around the corner, beware!!!!!

The 3 main differences between the 450 and 480 are:

        - the 3-position switch On/Off/Auto
        - the metal vs plastic body
        - the integrated preparation mat on the 480 as opposed to the 450 detachable one

I bought the 480, preferring the aesthetics of the all metal body and integrated preparation mat. Ive never moved the 3-position swtich from the Auto setting, apart from turning it off for cleaning.

I would imagine that if you were extremely tight on bench space, then the detachable preparation mat would be beneficial.

Thanx, versatile - its been a great help - I may go for the 450 in that case.
          cheers

I have a 450 from the Melb factory shop for ~$104 @ Feb09 they had plenty and no 480s
I have the vague idea that the 450 doesnt have a 5 year motor guarantee as the 480 does.

I think youre right there and when you consider the RRP difference of $150 v $200, the $50 extra has to be accounted for by more than the body and switch.

$104 is a bargain for an entry level machine to get you towards coffee nirvana

                  You raise a good point.
                  From the Sunbeam site:

                    Hi Scuba,

I just bought a 0480 off another CS member.  It is my first grinder and I am extremely happy with it.  Im only a novice compared to most CS members but have also made a few thousand coffees during my years in restaurants.

Combined with my 6910 I get the best coffee Ive ever had (so far).  I have a 4800 at work and made just 2 shots using the grinder.  The shots were not as good, mostly because the krups unpressurised basket i was using has larger holes and the shot had grinds in it.  Im sure with more tweaking I could get a very good shot.

I suspect the main advantage of getting a better grinder like the Rocky would be longevity.

One thing I have noticed is thata the 0480 seems to fetch pretty good resale prices on evil bay. If you bought yourself an 0480 and decided to upgrade 6 months later, you should get 75% of your money back.

                    Cheers,

                    John

0450 & 0480 both are the same thing just different body. As for the Rocky: better grinding, better build, greater longevity but also greater price. If you can save up some you could pick one up 2nd hand- still better than a new 480 and you wont regret it!

Just out of curiosity, what decided you on the 480 instead of 450?

                            Hi Versatile,
two things in the end (1) metal finish looked better up against the metal finish of the EM 4800C (2) 5 year warranty on motor ( as suggested up the page a little )
                            Cheers
