    Hi
its interesting to note you had a good experience with EM 480. i have EM 450 (had 480 before but exchanged it for 450 as there was no perceptible difference in grind quality).

Are you still happy with your EM 480 grind quality? my EM450 quality is disappointing even at gring setting 25 and the 30ml shot comes out in 10-12 secs. No good.

Grind setting 25? That is the coarses the grinder will go! 0 is the finest. Drop it down a few notches. Nothing but good reports for my EM480

ive been through 3 different 0480s in as many weeks - each one had a different fault.

I hope its a case of 3rd time lucky -this one seems to grind at setting 15 which is much higher setting that the initial 2 units. This unit seems to produce alot more static hence much more mess on my bench top.

I think upgaditis will set in very soon - it would be great to test drive a rocky or a few other grinders just for comparison sakes

Do you have the rubber spout extension? Ive found it reduced the mess by at least 80%.

yep - still get a circle of grinds about 10-20cms out from the grinder, not a huge amount but on a white marble bench top it is very noticeable.

As long as it grinds effectively Im not that phased about the mess - (for now anyway).

I have my post-pour cleaning routine worked out well so I can sit down and enjoy my coffee without having to worry about cleaning up afterward s.

Best way to get rid of static for me is to grind into a metal container first and then pour into basket.
Tried the rubber spout and although it made less mess (still messy IMO)
              I still got some clumping.
Then tried grinding into the supplied plastic container and could still see a lot of clumping.
Then ground into a milk steaming jug and the grounds flowed out perfectly.
I think the plastic parts build up a lot of static whereas the metal container discharges it.

Been using it for a while now and it works a treat.

                  The main differences are external.

The body on the 0480 is metal the 0450 body is plastic.
The 0480 switch has "Auto/On/Off" positions; the 0450 is "On (push to grind)/Off".

I do believe the warranty on the 0450 is different.
One of them is "repair" and the other is "replace"; I cant remember which way around.
And I think the 0480 for some reason has a 5 year warranty on the motor.

Have been using the EM0480 for a few weeks now (with the 6910) and finding I need to grind at about 5 or 6 to get the right indication on the pressure gauge. I also have a DeLonghi KG100 which gives me a good pour at the 4 setting with no mess at all. The Sunbeam does make a mess though and I wondered if anyone had maybe tried a simple mod to fix this. I have tried the spout extender but it hasnt made much difference due to the static issue. I thought perhaps a 32 mm hole in the collector lid would form a collar around the spout, keeping the grinds inside and preventing the mess. Any thoughts?

Sounds like it might work but how are you going to position it?
                        Some kind of stand?

Have made the mod and it works very well as far as keeping the grinds inside the collector. I use the grind on the auto setting and activate the switch with the collector which works perfectly. The grinds themselves seem to be statically charged and that seems to be the main cause of the clumping and overall difficulty of handling the grinds. They actually jump out of the collector when trying to fill the portafilter and still make a bit of mess. On the other hand, the DeLonghi has no static, doesnt clump and the grinds pour quite easily. Definitely the better design and will be using it until Sunbeam come up with a fix. Not good considering the Delonghi is much cheaper than the Sunbeam.

I had the same problem with static
                            Try grinding into something metal
                            I use another steaming jug
Grinds dont clump anymore and mess is down to almost nothing
