  • Rancilio MD 50 refurbishment

I posted some pics of the new vs old burrs for this and promised to post more detailed pics so here it is.

I bought this grinder from an auction a little while ago. There was nothing wrong with it, it was just dirty and looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in a while. The paint was all chipped and the stainless body looked like it could do with a bit of a polish. In the end I decided to strip it, polish the stainless and repaint the body. I took a heap of photos as I pulled it apart and reassembled it so I thought I would post them up for those who are interested. I myself find these posts interesting. I like to look at what others have done and find I get something out of the posts. So I thought I would post up what I did. Also I couldnt find a lot on the net about this grinder. I believe it is still sold and from what I had seen from the photos on the net there doesnt appear to be much that has changed. Mine is a 1997 model.

The grinder was pretty filthy, to me it was quite a bad build up of old coffee on everything. To follow are a few photos of various dirty parts.

Picture of the top minus the hopper. Two of the bolts were missing. It seemed the previous owner had somehow managed to snap them off. These were used to locate the hopper onto the top of the grinder. They are threaded internally and I think the hopper was screwed to these. However any bolts that may have existed were missing and the hopper was just sitting there. I didnt bother to replace them as it sits there ok and doesnt seem to move around. I managed to get the broken threads out. Once I disassembled the grinder I got my dremel in behind and cut a slot in the bolt from behind. That then enabled me to get a flat blade screwdriver onto them and unscrew them from underneath.

The grinder isn’t stepless as the smaller wheel is stepped and is locked via the pushdown button seen in the next photo. However for all intents and purposes it is stepless as the adjustments are fairly small.

Another photo of the grinder collar and adjuster. The hopper feeds into this collar bit. This bit was all gummed up with old coffee oils. Took a couple of soakings in coffee machine cleaner and hot water to shift this.

Photo of the spinning burr and grinder chamber.  All those loose looking grinds were actually sitting on top of coffee oil gum.  It all broke off in pieces.

the previous pics were of the static burr.

Photo of inside the doser. The spindle was also pretty dirty with a nice build up. The ali box at the top was the auto shut off. This grinder is automatic. Every 6 pulls on the handle and it turns itself on. That box is the auto shut off. Once the grinds build up the black paddle is pushed back and it engages the switch in the next photo and turns the grinder off.

Some photos of the underside of the doser. You can see the mechanism for the counter and the auto on switch.
