Re: Rancilio MD 50 refurbishment
Thanks a ton for posting this. I just have a couple of questions. I have it ripped apart for the most part minus the hopper and the motor.
How in the world did you get the motor off? What type of paint did you use? Did you strip the old paint off first?
Thanks again.

Yes Clinto,Originally posted by Clinto link=1163122347/30#33 date=1163135444good way to get hold of a cheap grinder. I bought it at auction and had to replace burrs and feet so all up less than $220.
And even if it has had a hard life, its so solidly built that any ongoing maintenance that may be required into the future is not likely to cost an arm and a leg either. The motor bearings can probably be easily replaced if and when that needs doing, with readily available standard sizes..... the occasional clean out, etc to make sure the motor cooling channels/galleries are kept open. From looking at your photos of the Dosing mechanism, its so oversized for the job that I doubt this will ever wear out. All in all its one terrific grinder mate 8-). All the best.....

Re: Rancilio MD 50 refurbishment
thanks guys
yeh its a solid beast, with a big torquey motor. the original feet for it were all split so I ended up binning them. I was running it for a bit on the bench without any feet and it would cause the grinder to spin about 50mm every time you flicked it on.

Re: Rancilio MD 50 refurbishment
The stainless sides got a quick buffing on the bench grinder which brought them up quite well. I much prefer the black and chrome look to the original grey.

Re: Rancilio MD 50 refurbishment
Another finished photo. I hadn’t quite finished here. I was still in the process of finishing the hopper with a plastic polish to eliminate the haze and remove some of the scratches. I had already done the doser screen. The hopper came up quite well once I had finished. There were still a few scratches though as it was scratched fairly deep, but I got rid of the haze and made it all glassy smooth.
I had a blanket on the bench so I wouldnt scratch the paint (if you were wondering)

Re: Rancilio MD 50 refurbishment
Finished unit. There are two switches. Black one is main power switch. When that is on grinder will run once handle goes around 6 times and will auto shut off when doser is full. Orange switch will make it grind and it will again grind until doser is full.

Re: Rancilio MD 50 refurbishment
doser going back on
The doser was a real PIA to remove. The bolts that attach to the rod in previous photo are really difficult to get out. I didnt get a pict of the bolts, but they are really close to the side of the doser body so you cant get a socket onto them. The only way I could get them off was to use a 10mm open ended ring spanner and put a crescent and put that on top of the bolt and use a crescent to twist the spanner as in photo. It’s not that clear, but if you need to get it off you should understand what I mean.
