    - Mahlkonig K30 ES (not conical so perhaps just the best big flattie)
The old K30s are PIGS! Just a really bad grinder. Clumpy, messy and lots of static. The new generation Mahlkonigs (varios - stepless grinders) are a marked improvement and I actually enjoyed using them for competition up at 2009 Cafe Biz. A lot cleaner and nice & quiet!

If youre after a nice flat burr grinder, go the Mazzer Major. Grind time is pretty close to Robur territory at sub 5 sec for a full La Marzocco double basket.
The K30 is sub 5 sec too for double dosing.

      My opinion:

all great grinders (the ones I know) but....Total overkill for home use.

Because of that (the overkill), any of them would be "great" for home use as they are far in excess of what is required. Where they may not be so great is the weight / size / etc. in domestic kitchen.

If money is no object (just look at the list   ) but a mans gotta do what a mans gotta do....I wouldnt worry about conicals at all and would rather go an excellent flat plate grinder for a much better (but still outrageous for home use) price.

In which case I would go a Macap M7 or a Mazzer Super Jolly as I tbink anything above these (in home use), is a total waste of money for no advantage gained. These 2 give excellent results in quality, & are high speed anyway (not required in home use). No need to go further....

          - If you can jump on a K10, do it because the Compak distributor has unfortunately gone under.
I believe Expobar Australia is the new importer.

Ok I have a couple minutes to kill over a sandwich and a play then back to serious work......

Re your quote Dennis: Yup, the ferrari.....a waste of money hehehehe. Just give me a nice Duke to ride on Sunday, and an old tired looking Jap ute for commuting around in during the week! Tough as nails and unbreakable. Also...understated (the ute).

These replies are only everyones opinions.

No offence intended to Identity, but the trouble always starts in the topic Heading...in this case " Ultimate home grinder.....".

In the first place none are home grinders
            In the second, given the word "home", in my opinion anyone that has a Macap M4 or a Mini Mazzer already has an "ultimate home grinder";
In the third instance, using grinders in the calibre of those mentioned, at home, in my opinion, does not make them an "ultimate", it just makes them "bigger sized with larger capacity, theoretically able to deliver a "better" grind -  for those that are capable of discerning that, and definitely with more bragging rights at home.

That said...if I get into the topic for the sake of just getting into it regardless of anything Ive already written .....I would take the Mahlkonig.....Or......one that hasnt been mentioned at all the "large" BNZ.

Why? Coz I just like them...its an intangible emotional thought

            ?

Just serious thoughts in contribution to the topic!

            Cheers,
            A.

The k10 is on the list because there was a very large discernible taste difference between that and the mazzer mini and macap m4 at a recent sydney snobs meet up (using the same bean and same machine)

Have you misinterpreted my post? I was making an observation in comparison to the other grinders in the list submitted by Identity.

The K10 in itself, may only be on the list because the manufacturer won a contract to supply a grinder to a well known barista competition. Thats marketing genius and a coup for the manufacturer! Is it any "better" than any of the others....? Who knows.

I have more important things to do than argue.

I am therefore deleting the offending section from my post for you.

for those that are capable of discerning that
Well, I dont have a benchmark unfortunately, but I used to have a career in incense + aromatherapy, and before that worked as a chef. My palate can tell the difference between a entry-level cafe grinder and a high-end grinder. Can you not, Attilio?

The Ultimate Home Grinder for me is the one that

                        a) gvies the best extractions in-cup.
                        b) has a short grind path & is easy to adjust and clean.

                        b) is a much smaller concern than a).

As Ben said, we could all taste the difference IIRC.

Re: Ultimate home grinder, K10 WBC or something else?

For me In my heart I would love a K10 on the bench, It fits far more comfortably in a home setting then a Robur.

In my head Im pretty happy with my Super Jolly.
Its a much nicer speed then the mini. Its more then enough machine for my non pimped Silvia which I think is the weaker point in my setup. (if you forget my sometimes dodgy roasting)

I think there would be many kitchens where the Robur would be too tall to fit under the cubbords.

One thing that hasnt been mentioned and needs to be seriously considered with conicals is the way you might use them. Many of us only throw 20gm of beans in the grinder before we make a coffee.

Imo conicals need a decent mass of beans above the burrs to get a consistent grind and prevent popcorning.
This is less of an issue with flat burr grinders as the beans are fed to the burrs using centrifugal force rather then gravity.
This gives you a few options, you either just dont worry too much about popcorning, you waste lots of beans or you develop a cleaning regime that includes tipping the grinder upside down to retrieve the unused beans. I suspect that for home use, the hassle might be more then its worth.

I put 1-2 days beans in the grinder (up to half a kilo) and then get through it - Im really not a 20gm/hopper person because I think most grinders popcorn badly when they have a few beans in them.

Certainly a good point (also worth mentioning that a few of the conicals have an augur to prevent popcorning).

                              Have you tested this theory?

The other night I ran 20g of beans through my conical Gino Rossi and didnt notice any pocorning.

I know the Macap M5 popcorns every time I do the same.

Ill have to do it again and take more notice.
