Gee John, I didnt think you were that old!
Im not sure whether thats a finely veiled compliment ;D

I didnt work as a chef for long - I have a nasty temper when you combine hot pans with idiots. Id like to get back into incense (like coffee its an expensive habit to have as a hobby), but not into aromatherapy.

M4/M5 does popcorn more than a popcorn popper full of coffee beans - increasing the diameter of a similar design would cause more popcorn, while conicals would change the angle of deflection, at the very least

for those that are capable of discerning that
Well, I dont have a benchmark unfortunately, but I used to have a career in incense + aromatherapy, and before that worked as a chef. My palate can tell the difference between a entry-level cafe grinder and a high-end grinder. Can you not, Attilio?

      ...
It must be seriously good to have such a fine palate...I went from a Rocky to a Super Jolly and noticed a difference, so perhaps from there up there might be a similar difference...having said that the Titan grinder review in the US seemed to find that some of the top grinders including the SJ were better at one type of bean roasted a certain way and another grinder was then better at getting the best from another bean and so on...so I suspect that you will never get a grinder that is the best for all beans...pitty.

I have had the SJ for what about a year now, perhaps a little longer, and it and my FAEMA Due tuned up have well and truly cured upgraditis for me...at least until my wife and I taste consistently better flat whites at the Brisbane coffee houses - yet to happen - in which case I might be tempted to a Robur ;D

      Good luck mate.

      Cheers

Ill have to do it again and take more notice.
I tested the lazy way by asking Hazels opinion and she ran 20g of beans through one of her conicals at the shop; no popcorning.

Yes no popcorning but having used a Robur for quite while (yes it had an auger) your grind still drifts quite a bit (coarser) the less coffee you have in the hopper. I dont know if it drifts controllably or not (as in when you have 20gm in the hopper it always has the same amount of drift).

I think this really varies from grinder to grinder. My K10 popcorns REALLY bad on the last say 10 grams of beans. I can visually see beans jumping around and the grind will be a whole lot coarser.

Popcorning was probbably not the ideal description, perhaps its a different effect even between different conical. I guess so long as it "drifts"  consistently then there is no reason that the brew times shouldnt be conistent either. If someone with a K10 or other conical wants to do some taste tests with and without a bean mass in the hopper Im sure we would all eagerly await the results.

Wouldnt your K10 hold ~8gm in the chute?

Yeap. But the last 10 grams of beans left will be waste and I just have to take that into account whenever I grind

Re: Ultimate home grinder, K10 WBC or something else?

Ive pretty much got down to the Kony and K10 WBC for my "ultimate" home grinder.

I understand that the Kony is not exactly a speed demon compared to the K10.  What if speed is not a major factor?  Nine seconds for a double doesnt seem too bad for home use.

How does the build quality of the Kony compare to the K10?  I have always got the impression the K10 is perhaps not built to quite the same standard as the commercial Mazzers.  However, I am sure it is a good unit.

It seems like its hard to get anyone to place the Kony in a good light vs. the K10.  I suppose that should tell me something.  Is there anyone who has used both grinders and has anything else to offer?

I rate it Bob- so much so that I have just ordered a black kony-e (special order) to go on the bench at home with the GS/3. This will displace the K10 I have. The K10 will return to the warehouse as a demo grinder. Both are great, the Mazzers are better built and a 9 sec double wont worry me at home. Why not a Robur-e? Theyre just a tad big and it looks silly beside my machine. That said, the Robur-e and Faema at work make a formidable couple.

How difficult is it to get hold of a Kony-e Chris? Sounds like something I might be interested in a few months time.... 8-)

                          No probs at all Mal,

Plenty of silver ones around but I wanted a black one, so ordered one to come late September...

                              I have seen them working
The Kony is slow very slow much slower than the M4D
                              But still a good grinder

Any Kony-E owners care to comment? Nine seconds for a Double Shot sounded reasonable to me :-?
