  • ECA KS Grinder Vs Iberital Challenge?

How does this compare to an iberital challenge, performance, grind qaulity and consistency (besides the obvious that 1 is stepped and other infinite adjustment)?

Re: ECA KS Grinder Vs Iberital Challenge?

    Gday cd.....

Id put the KS a step or two above the Iberital Challenge and I dont believe that the KS being stepped is an issue as the steps are quite small. It has a burr set very similar in size to a Rocky but Im not familiar with the design of them; probably different given the Rocky is Direct Drive and the KS is driven through a gearbox at lower rpm.... Probably a good thing in the overall scheme of things but may be a little slow if speed is an issue for you.

The KS is not as ruggedly built as a Rocky though, given that a Rocky is a trimmed down commercial grinder while the KS is a domestic grinder from inception. That may affect the longevity of it, but if the quality of the gearbox/motor combo is good then this may not apply. Only way to know for sure really is to try and arrange a demo with a reputable specialist coffee hardware retailer and then make up your own mind from there. Several of our Site Sponsors should be able to help in that regard.... 8-)

    All the best
    Mal.

Re: ECA KS Grinder Vs Iberital Challenge?

The site sponsor who sold me my KS (Di Bartoli) were of the opinion that the KS was actually better built than the Rocky, not sure that either opinion can be backed up as they both have similarly rated motors & are similar weights & similar builds, though if I remember correctly the KS plastics are less likely to shatter than the Rocky (this should be a non-issue in use, cant see anyone repeatedly dropping a grinder to find this out). The Rocky does have a tinted hopper, though unless its actually filtering UV, its just for show. Not actually sure where the Rocky comes into it though Site sponsor Talk Coffee review it here: http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1176798866/15 , where Chris said it replaced his Rocky - having said that, I think hes now replaced it with something high-end

The KS is definitely faster, grinding a double for me in about 21-23 seconds, and the steps are small.

      Iberital Challenge:

      http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1234397240 - glugging up problem
http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1219996648 - glugging, clumping, build quality

having said that, the challenge is great VFM and has a worm drive allowing for infinite adjustment.

A nice detailed review of the KS under the original manufacturers name - Anfim, and quite recent too....

          Thanks Mal, nice review.

note that the KS is internally the same grinder, but the PF rest and switch are as pictured on the Aussie KSs, not quite the same setup, as can be seen on the image @ http://www.dibartoli.com.au/product_details.asp?pid=113

          cheers,
