  • Upgrading from EM450 for Miss Silvia

    Hi all,

I am ready to give Miss Sylvia a new companion and upgrade my EM450 grinder.

The original plan was to get a Rocky Doser (2009 model), but I can squeeze some extra into the budget to a total of $900, which puts me into Mini-Mazzer territory.

I grind Espresso most days of the week, but also use the Plunger often as well. With the EM450, its quick and simple to switch between the 2 grind settings.

Beans FYI are from 7 Seeds via BBB. Fresh and tasty.

Im not keen on the grinders with the tamper attached, I already have a nice tamper tyvm

So, am wondering what are some good choices in the price range which can switch between Espresso & Plunger grinds with minimum of fuss. I have read lots of reviews but the "practicality" of this is rarely mentioned.

    Thanks!

Hi Nathan, Ive got a MM and only use it for espresso, I use my EM450 as my plunger/drip filter grinder, I dont know if you have the counter space to do this or not, I have my Sunbeam in the garage with my roaster and just keep it on the pluger/drip setting for use when required.
A stepped machine may suit your needs better if you dont want to run 2 grinders.

      Thanks for the feedback.

Counter space is definately at a premium, so one grinder is really the only option.

If push comes to shove I could always just get out my old Zassenhous hand grinder for the plunger, but want to know of any other practical options first.

The shortlist I have in mind so far is: Mini Mazzer, K3 WBC & Macap M4... but I think for all of these it will be best to leave on espresso.

      Cheers

Another option is the ECA Best or KS (Anfim). I just upgraded from an Iberital challenge to the ECA KS doserless. Both ECA/Anfim grinders are small footprint, and fairly quiet - sounded almost pleasant compared to the EM450 and Iberital. And still quieter than the Compak K3 and Rocky  - yes, I played in the shop for quite a while.....

The are easy to switch between fine and coarse grinds, and the steps are still fine enough (given my limited experience over the weekend - ask me again in a few weeks).

I suspect the KS is roughly equivalent to the Rocky (similar burrs), with smaller steps, and a more "metal" build - it also has a hopper "shutter" so you can remove the hopper with beans still in place as well. The Best has a larger burr set, so is faster and more powerful - the KS takes its time.

I suspect youre up for the doser/doserless decision first - your options change quickly depending on which way you go. Never tried to grind for plunger through a doser - sounds inconvenient compared to doserless.., but in going from doser to doserless, Im missing the cleanliness of a doser, even though I just "ground through" the doser.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

        cheers

          - Kevin

Having owned a Mazzer for a little while now I can say that unless your the kind who likes to keep a stash of beans in the hopper there is really little need to have a second grinder for plunger or decaf etc. Its remarkable easy to adjust and when returned to your original set point will consistently deliver the same grind as if you never even changed it.

Dosers can be somewhat inconvenient if grinding for plunger, I find that I need to grind into some kind of container first. For espresso however the doser greatly helps me reduce wastage by giving me somewhere to sweep my grinds when leveling, where they are easily used for the next shot.

I had a similar problem when grinding for the Aeropress.
Solved with a small SS bowl bought from one of those "$ stores" for about $2.

I can quickly dose everying into the bowl and then transfer.

Yep I do exactly the same thing on my dosed Anfim. Have for years and never had a drama.

Regarding switching between different grinds, this is where I find the stepped adjustments of the Anfim/EKS to be great. My grinder is set for espresso most of the time, but when grinding for plunger/aeropress, I know that theres 5 or so steps difference between them. a quick clack and its set. clack-back and Im on espresso again

Re: Upgrading from EM450 for Miss Silvia

Thanks everyone, the information is much appreciated.

Im fairly certain Ive settled on a Mini Mazzer (polished finish of course!).

Unfortunately my purchase has been delayed somewhat, due to my cat (a female bengal) getting a nasty injury which required a trip to the vet for surgery, so unless I want to start producing some of those pre-digested coffee beans, that money has gone to a better cause :P

Ah well, pretty soon Ill be ringing the sponsers to get my new shiny toy.

                  Cheers.

Darn vet bills. Could have myself a GS3 for all the money Ive spent.

Mmmm "Kopi Kitty". The new wave sweeping the nation   ;D

I do feel your pain though.... bloody animals!  :

The Mazzers & Macaps, et al are great grinders to be sure, but dont discount some of the lower-priced grinders available. Ive had my Anfim for about nine years now. It worked beautifully for my Silvia for 8 of those years, and its now working equally as well with my Giotto. In all that time the only thing Ive had to spend on it is a new set of burrs.

                      Cheers,

                      Caff.

now your making me rethink of spending so much money on a MM. hmmmmm :-/ oh well, I think it will be a nice investment.

are you going to buy it soon? Ive planned to pick mine up tomorrow on the gold coast. Apparently, there is a shortage of MM in QLD (not sure about the rest of AU) they are hard to find and you might have to wait till october. hopefully not late oct!

let me know if you get it and what you think cause its going to be my first grinder.

Dont get me wrong, as I mentioned, theyre great grinders. I doubt youll be disappointed

My point is that its also worthwhile keeping an open mind and objectively evaluating alternatives based on what you think will do the job to your satisfaction. Its easy to get swept up in buying "the best" without really sitting back and thinking about what is "the best" for me

As many have said here regarding both machines and grinders, check them out for yourself. Put say a Rocky next to an ECA, next to a Mazzer or Macap and objectively compare them yourself with questions like "Is the extra expense of "x" over "y" and what Ill get out of it worth it to me"

"Yes" is a perfectly acceptable answer to that by the way. As long as you genuinely see additional value to you then go for it and anyone who tries to argue with you be damned. Its your money not theirs

Anyway, just my ramblings. I do that, it annoys my wife no end ;D

                          Cheers,

                          Caff.

yeah, your right, i have high expectations and im quite fussy. Thats why im going for it for my first grinder.

I love how you worded that, yes correct, it is my money. IMO, i see the MM quite valuable and will meet my expectations.

                            thanks Caff

                              Hi all,

Just thought Id give an update.  After the bank account recovered from Vet bills, I decided to go ahead and get a Mini Mazzer.

Finding one in Polished Aluminium was a struggle, but I was lucky enough to snag the very last one from Chris at Talk Coffee.

Picked it up last Saturday from a jet lagged Chris and I am very happy with it.

Looks very nice next to Miss Sylvia... of course Sylvia doesnt look shiny enough now...

                              Cheers.
