  • DeLonghi ESAM 6600 Auto grinder problem

I have a friend who has a Delonghi Prima Donna ESAM 6600 that he uses when he entertains and wants people to make their own coffee so he is not stuck in the kitchen making great coffee with his manual machine.

Problem: The inbuilt grinder does not have sufficient adjustment at the fine end of scale and thus the coffee draws too quickly.

I know that with many grinders it is possible to make adjustments to the grinder by adding metal shims etc to one of the grinder burrs. Is this possible with the Delonghi?

The question: If it is possible to alter the grinder, is there somewhere in Sydney that can do this? Or, alternatively, is there somewhere I can source a service manual to have a go at doing it myself?

Delonghis unhelpful contribution was that "the grinder is factory set" and that was the end of it! Damned if I am going to accept that though and write off the machine because it cant even make an ordinary (let alone extraordinary!) coffee for the sake of a grinder adjustment. Surely it must be possible to modify the grinder in some way?

Thanks for any assistance with this.

    Would suggest not grinder....

    What beans are you/he using?

The grinders all have some adjustment but it will not compensate for stale beans. In addition, to fine and you will need lots of service visits.

    My guess is stale beans

DeLonghi tried the "which beans line" too. Altho my friend is not, I am an experienced user who lives in a coffee growing area, selecting, blending and sometimes roasting my own beans. I know a fresh bean when I see one! My friend has tried many different kinds of beans even fresh roasted the day before. It is the GRINDER that is the issue, not the user or the beans. Many thanks for your input though.

And when you asked Delonghi this question what was their response?

A very limited range and of grind settings is typical in auto machines. Unfortunately I have not come across a remedy.

As far as Im aware, the only way you may find an improvement, dependent on how much use the machine has had, is by replacing the bur set. Perhaps Delonghi can provide you with a referral to someone who can do this, or, as you are an experienced user, you could do it yourself?

Unfortunately I cant help much more than that, as unlike yourself, I dont live in a coffee growing area.

one of the places I work at has a delonghi magnifica that has grinder adjustment knob where you put the beans in. I spent a bit of time adjusting the grind and shot time once and got an average shot from it, but it didnttake long before people fiddled and it went back to making superauto type coffee

If you are into coffee and a coffee producing area etc... Why did someone obtain a super auto with out testing etc . Every one here knows the White goods type units do not work....

Now if ya want a working super auto... Then one sponsor actually specalises on them..

I did my best to discourage him from purchase  ;D, but convenience won over (for him). Now I just want to modify and improve his machines functioning, but need to know how to achieve this without dismantling the machine without a service/repair manual

Try reviewing the dose setting. Another user had the same sort of issue only the other day. Use th advanced search function

I was unable to find the reference you mention to dose settings. And perusing the manual (Fairly briefly, I admit), there didnt seem to be any option to alter the dose size in settings of the Prima Donna

                        Adjustable coffee quantity

Read section 6 page nine and think like a nube ... Not one who understand coffee..

If ya can not get it correct... The grinder is faulty or ya beans are stale...

OK. I had read the section you refer to. But youre right I didnt get it the first time. I will suggest to him that he try using pre-ground coffee (using his other coffee grinder), at what looks like the right density and see if it pours correctly. If it does and no further adjustment is available in the grinder in the Prima Donna, then as you suggest its probably a dud.....hence my desire to explore making some "unofficial modification" to the grinder to at least be able to use the machine. Otherwise its a very expensive boat anchor

Dont forget to go with the double ... If ya do the pre ground option... Also compare the pucks of the shots being done my the machine...

OH... Loved this in teh manual... No wonder people complain about bitter coffee...

NOTE 4: while the appliance is making the coffee, delivery can be stopped at any time by pressing one of the coffee buttons (fig. 10).

                            This is good..  Short shot.

NOTE 5: as soon as delivery is complete, to increase the quantity of coffee, simply press and hold one of the coffee buttons (fig. 10), until the desired quantity is reached (this operation must be performed within 3 seconds from when coffee delivery from the spouts.

WTF... This means more water through the small puck of coffee grinds... OH Boy......

PS... If under a year old... I will pay postage and take it off his hands...

Note 5, Reminds me of when another mate tried to make me a long bland in a mug on an EM6910...  He was away for some time... About 2 cigs I recon... Handed me my mug of a long black and a sugar bowl.  He proceeded to almost empty the sugar into his mug.. And asked me how many sugars I wanted...

FOOLISHLY - I stated none...  Took a sip and I think teh shocked look on my face said it all.

He argued that my coffee beans were a bit better, but that he ran out and go some beans from DiBella...

I said ... WHAT....  Then got him to show me, what he did..

YEP...  He just ran and ran and ran it;  till he had a long black in a mug from one double basket...

OH and as he likes his hot... He then nuked his in a microwave...

Sometimes ya just wonder why ya get out of bead...... ;D

Opps just tried to read teh manual.. Who said an Auto is just punch a button... Even some of teh most touchy manual systems would need less care than the DeLonghi ESAM 6600 Auto..
