  • Best setting for Sunbeam EM0480

    Hello,

I already own a Sunbeam EM6910 coffee machine and have just purchased a Sunbeam EM0480 ginder. Can someone please tell me which is the best setting for the grinder to make espresso - the manual says 12-16.
Also do I need to mod my ginder?
    Thanks
    Anthony

    Welcome to Coffee Snobs Anthony.

Have you tried the grinder yet?
I tried 13 first off and adjusted from there.
Unless the numbers are way off, the grinder wont need any modification.
What makes you think it might?

Also, have you got freshly roasted beans?
Without them youll get nowhere fast.

      Hi Anthony.

The best setting depends on the beans and their age and the moisture. It also depends on how true your particular EM0480 is. Mine is currently on 9 and it varies up to about 12.

Use the search (but dont forget to change the default from week to year) because there is plenty of info here on the 480. Many of them including mine required extra washers to tune them. If you cant get espresso grind then the Sunbeam help desk will sort you out assuming the machine is new.

This is really the only mod you need to do matched to the 6910 but you will find a few mods if you want to chase a more even particle size.

        Thanks for the update.
After reading some forums I tried setting 10 but the coffee took about 45sec to get 30ml. The coffee was a bit bitter. I will try setting 13 as suggested and go from there.
Is purchased a pre rostered lavazza coffee beans from the deli.
Does it make that much of a difference if I roast my own beans?

How do I tell if I am getting the correct grind for espresso?
        Thanks for your help

Stale beans... See the bean bay here or a local roaster.

I started on about 12 or 13 and adjusted from there.
Depending on bean, roast and age it needs to be adjusted on the go but I have now had to go to the lowest so far of 5.

Hoping a good clean will help out, or Ill have to call sunbeam or look onto the washer mod, luckily I have the new kyocera waiting for me at work as backup if needed.

Mine needs to be down at 5 or 6 to work properly. I have read the threads and found my grinder has 2 washers rather than the standrad three - called Sunbeam to get another sent out and the guy was adamant I had to clean it all, test that the top burr was in etc before he would consider sending me out a washer...so I did all that and called back, only to find out they have no stock at the moment :-)

Mine use to sit on about 12 - 11 for softer beans and 13 for the harder ones.

Bugger, I was going to ring them today. Did a good clean the other day and still sitting on 5.

Oh well at least I have the Kyocera now if it decides to go any lower.

I use 9-10 and a 3 kg tamp. This works best for me since i roast my own.
Pour is about 25 ml in 25 seconds which is ballpark for espresso. Gauge reads around the 1pm sweet spot.
You guys need to play around a bit with settings. Dont worry about numbers on the grinder, as long as you hit 25 ml in around 25 seconds as your reference point, then taste the difference! Enjoy.

Re: Best setting for Sunbeam EM0480

With mine I start at 15 (3-4 days post-roast) and then dial down from there. By the time my bag runs out at 10-12 days post roast, Im usually down to around 12.

Get your hands on some fresh beans (+1 for BeanBay), allow yourself some time and prepare to throw away A LOT of shots and just have fun!
