I think we really need to be a bit sensible about all of this! Most of us have used both of these grinders and it is quite obvious that the SJ is a much nicer shape than the 0480. Horses for courses people!
Well, I dont really care much about shape, colour or any other cosmetic issue at all. If it allows me to pour a great espresso when ever I want one, then the grinder is a goodn....

So it comes down to (drum roll)...your budget. In my experience, the large conical grinders definitely deliver in the cup. I went from a Sunbeam EM0480 to Iberital Challenge to Mazzer Mini and now Mazzer Kony-e.
So did you find much difference between the Sunbeam EM0480 (we used my Lux there but Ive tested that vs an EM0480 and found them identical), Iberital Challenge and Mazzer Mini?
In our back to back testing with a full commercial HX, there was no discernable difference in grind quality between these (and also the Super Jolly, NS MCF and the Rocky with teflon taped burr carrier). The only real difference was noise level, adjustabilty (Rocky and Lux/EM0480 are stepped) etc but at the same grind setting, there was no discernable difference in the shots.
You have got to be Joking? No difference between a 0480 and an SJ ? Or am I reading this wrong? (its late)
;D

Though Ive havnt yet had the chance to use one Im quite a fan of the Mazzer Mini, and hadnt planned on buying second-hand if I could avoid it. These units seem pretty easy to come by brand new.
I also really like the idea of the Type-A grind to dose unit. It appeared to be an effective way of avoiding waste in a home-volume environment where there is already going to be proportionally high waste as grind adjustments are made. Has anyone had any experience with this type?
If you are interested, Ive replied to this question in the coffee machine thread you started in the commercial equipment section.
The problem at hand may well be bench space (you mentioned above), but there are two other real "problems" for you to consider.
One is your budget, and the other is to understand that once your bench space and budgetary problems are sorted and you have made a decision, you should not allow endless academic discussion about what is "better" to sour your later enjoyment of the equipment you settled for ("grass is greener" syndrome).
KK, its great that you found the difference in the cup between using a Macap M4D Vs a Mazzer Major is huge. It would be great to have a cupping & "fun" session with you and others from this group. Unfortunately, many people dont have the palate & couldnt tell, arent interested, or cant budget the asking price for larger volume grinders.
Ultimately the only way for 1josha to put his mind at rest about which grinder to buy, is for him to ask his chosen retailer to set up a one on one comparison between a grinder in his budget, and another way out of his budget (but that he has been reading about as being "better" for whatever reason). He can then decide for himself if spending much more than the budgeted amount will give him any significant discernable improvement in the brew and if there is....is it worth the extra dollars to him.
If you buy second hand, it will be far less likely you will be able to do a one on one comparison, and if you are susceptible to "grass is greener" syndrome you could be left wondering.......

Howards storage world helped me out with a commercial quality unit as bench height was an issue when the Kony-e arrived. Its rock solid, adjustable, and looks great.

Lets put things into perspective. At the price, the Mazzer Mini is a terrific grinder.
A quality conical grinder Like the Mazzer Kony-e and Robur is at least 3 times the cost of a Mini.

Buy the best grinder you can afford. Its as simple as that.

My problem is bench space. The house is actually a one beddy apartment. Limited kitchen bench real estate. Not that would compromise my setup because of this...
Many CSers have a trolley system when space is an issue
Ones that come to mind can be purchased from Ikea or Bunnings

On a related note, the Mazzer Mini is generally highly regarded. But this confuses me a little because it is a flat burr grinder and as far as I understood, conical burr grinders offer a more consistent grind and expose the bean to less grinding friction-related heat (that can mess with a carefully conducted roast). Discuss. :P
Hang on. Might move this little tease to the grinders forum.
So I am getting my first home set-up ready now that Ive bought a house and made the wife happy. I need a good quality grinder. Im considering a Mazzer Mini, but see above. Any thoughts or other suggestions?
