  • mazzer spitting to the left, compak dropping clumps

mazzer mini manual shoots grinds out leftwards as per the sweep on the doser requiring rotating the grouphandle as you fill it so it dont all pack on the side.

compak k3 touch drops these rabbit droppings amongst the grinds that need to be colapsed by banging the grouphandle pre tamping. Apparently stiring them through with a paddle pop stick in the basket causes channeling.

These factors are making it hard for me to decide which grndr to pair up to the minore III i would like to buy..

    Interesting.. Seen and experienced  both..

Better still try the doser on a DCM with a 54mm group... 2/3 of the grinds end up on the bench (  ;D  = NOT).

I got a Knickd  for my DCM today (Thanks Epic76) and thought...  So how with it perform with my K3 T... Yep a few clumps..  more like belly button fluff balls than rabbit droppings (unless ya got small rabbits out your way).

I file till a small mound and then tap a few times with my HAND.. Not into dinging the tamper or the group...  Sorry, I feel that is a bad technical move.

Grind a bit more and have a slightly higher mound.... Tap with hand again, until it settles down and even.

Opps... Tamp mat and bench top not set up for Knickd     Proceed to tamp as normal.

What can I say...  Bloody great shot... Great extraction and what was in the cup was beyond expectation..

Outcome.. Doserless  8-)  I can manage... large quantities of grinds over the bench top = NOT

I had the same "spitting to the left" bias on my old Faema EPN. I solved the problem with an unobtrusive little device that screwed on using an existing screw hole. Bingo! It dosed dead centre into the basket.

Im going to do the same thing to my new lefty Mazzer Mini I got from 9 bar. Fantastic service from these sponsors too.

Ill post in the next day or so with the results...Ill make this one adjustable.

        Grinder discussions are always interesting.

All doser grinders tend to throw left and pretty much all of them drop dtraight if you use them as a commercial machine...

All doserless grinders can clump. Even my Robur-e and Kony-e do sometimes...

Bottom line is is does it cause channeling and more importantly, can you taste the the difference- if any?

I think we sometimes get pent up on process, rather than outcome

with the mazzer you can thwack real hard or real soft and itll help the coffee drop straight.
or get a BNZ conical you could turn it on its side and itd still have coffee dropping straight down into a perfect mound..mmmmm...bnz

Yes, most definitely you can pick up channeling in the cup. I think its something to worry about. But I take your point, sometimes we obsess.

                Hi,

Easy mod to fix all Mazzer dosing chambers.

Personally I dont see any of the issues raised as being problematic for the home. You will get a great coffee from either grinder.

                Martin.

                    Hi,

I got the template of the guys site. I cant find it at the moment. There was a link in one of the comments on the pictures. It gives you a full size template.

I can look for the file or link later.

                    Martin.

As David Seng has pointed out before, if you pull the sweeper quicker on a Mazzer the grinds hit the outlet wall and drops in the middle of the basket.
You can even get the grind to drop to the right, if you go fast enough.

Re: mazzer spitting to the left, compak dropping clumps

The only mod Ive done to my MM is the sweeper arm tape. Its easy to change your dosing technique.

My solution to the throw problem is to hold the group handle closer to the doser exit rather than resting it on the fork. I can also then easily rotate as necessary.

If you grind through the doser (ie thwack the dosing lever while it is grinding and thwack at the right speed (fairly quickly for me - snap to what BassWay said),  throwing isnt a problem. When the grounds reach the rim of the filter basket, I tap the handle a couple of times to settle the grounds before filling and tamping.
