What about mowing ya footpath    Does the office need a 24 port 100meg  Cisco Catalyst® 2900 Series XL ATM Switch  or a Laser cartridges C7115a...  What about sweep in the footpath ...  Cleaning ya windows

What a way to start the weekend...

A  "Must have matching Machine and grinder" M

    54mm basket and 54mm burrs ... I am in heaven 8-)

Would be interesting to get a review on it. Its the first time Ive heard of ceramic burrs being used. Interesting.

Theres been some feisty discussion about this model before already - Id be very keen to hear from an Aussie owner about their experiences.

I like the idea of pre-set grinds...one for the Presso, one for the Bellman, and one for my dream machine! Muahaha!

I did an independent review of 4 grinders one of which was the Vario for a UK retailer who was already selling the Vario. My experiences are not quite the same as most others

                You can read it here:

                http://www.bellabarista.co.uk/pdf/compact-grinder-1-closerlook.pdf

Perhaps gives another perspective, be it wrong or right,

                      Re: Mahlkonig Vario Grinder

Oh just a thought.....recently a few reports about the toothed belt breaking if a stone gets between the burrs or they jam. Strips the belt and nylon cogs within the grinder. OK in itself probably not so much of a problem, but a PITA to replace. However the belt and cogs "might" be an area subject to wear and deterioration unlike standard grinder designs.

Also, have a look at the link below....read/look very carefully

                      http://www.dittingswiss.ch/en_category/Domestic.html

Image on the right should be quite familiar to Vario owners.

                        EK6 or EK 7 ?

Interesting as to belt and stone issue..

Must admit; would rather have a belt break or slip (assuming parts can be obtained / fitted) than have burrs dammaged and or the excessive preasure cause casings etc to buckle or warp..

Then again... Why would there be any foreign matter in the beans any way : :-X

                          Re: Mahlkonig Vario Grinder

I took the plunge and ordered one of these from Ofra at Di Bartoli - it arrived on Tuesday.

This is my first electric grinder so I dont have anything to compare it to - I just know that its a hell of a lot faster than my Hario grinder!

                          Im also using a Presso...

                          Impressions?

Its very light, and very quiet.  Its not too tall, and is easy to move around.

It has the coolest start up sequence - the LCD digits activate one by one, then all the blue lights on the buttons one by one.  8-)

Sounds the same as a dishwasher or washing machine when the pump is running dry after pumping out all the water...but quieter.

Seems to take about 12 seconds to grind two spoons of beans - so pretty fast too!

I started with the finest grind on the right setting, and the coarsest grind on the left setting.  Result?  Powder...Presso choked.

Gentle easing off hasnt changed the result...so tomorrow Im throwing caution to the wind and backing the grind right off.

Even at the filter setting the grind is much finer than I expected.  :-?

Im finding that I get a short stream of dark liquid on the first press, which quickly stops.  The second press is much better, a longer stream that steadily lightens - the pour even has a hint of the Guiness effect.

                          Stay tuned!

                          Sniff  ;D

Re: Mahlkonig Vario Vs Eureka Mignon (choice)

                            Ok...

Need to sit back and make a hard choice..

                            1: Mahlkonig Vario Grinder

                            OR

                            2: Eureka Mignon

A: Limited space ( width and hight)
B: Needs to match my DCM
C: Quite... Like a little mouse of a morning
                            D: Pleasing to the eye
E: Availability of parts / Service in QLD

Further more... What I get from this http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1274782016 is what I will have to play with...

Now the review says a number of things and plenty I like as to the Vario... But the Mignon has some big pluses going for it..

Any users / owners of said units care to comment ?

                              AM

Have a look at this Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_DTGHBVHjg

Gives you a good idea of size & sound of Eureka v Mahlkonig.  I reckon my Vario is quieter than the one in the video though.

                              Cheers
