  • Newbie needing grinder advice

    Hi everyone,

I *thought* I was a coffee snob until I joined your forum a few days ago!

Okay so having looked at quite a few posts since joining Ive decided that the first thing I need (to get really serious) is a grinder. BUT I want to get a cheaper one to tide me over before I go hardcore (this will involving saving - not my forte).

Ive done a bit of a search of the forum but cant seem to find anything about the Krups burr grinder. Im wondering if anyone has any thoughts about them. Basically Im bidding for one on ebay (the only burr grinder I could afford on there) and with hindsight realised I should have asked this question first. I havent won it yet though - Im just wondering how hard to try.

    Cheers,

    Meg

      Re: Newbie needing grinder advice

Im looking for something under $150 (this is the max though). Im imagining there isnt a whole lot out there!

At this stage I alternate between dripolator, plunger and stovetop (I buy the appropriately ground coffee for each machine in small amounts from Merlo)

Im in a similar boat to you - looking for a decent but cheap grinder. While there are some people around here who might say that you cant get a decent grinder for less than 3.6 kazillion dollars (or $300), I have the impression that the top end sunbeam grinders do a decent job. The new 0450 (same as the classier 0480 but without the chrome) can be bought for less than $150. Im going to get one in the near future, I had a guy in Harvey Norman say he would give it to me for $137, but Im still looking around to see if thats the best price to be had.

You could get the EM0450 which is about $150 i think that is a pretty good starter grinder. But if your going to get serious about esspreso and coffee in the future of your coffee journey the Sunbeam EM0450 wont be good enough.

Oh Cool... that EM0450 looks like it could be the ticket!

I looked on the sunbeam website and apparently its new? So now the challenge is to see how cheap I can get it!

            *she flexes "negotiating muscles"*.

I shall try Harvey Norman first!

The Sunbeam EM0450 is just a cheaper version of EM0480, The EM0450 has the same grinding burrs as the EM0480 just with different looks and without the auto feature.

                Thanks Coffee Kid!

I notice you have the EM0480. How do you find it? Anything you do in particular to make it work for you?

                  Re: Newbie needing grinder advice

Im on my second replacement grinder because the first one i had started grinding finer and finer that it was till 0 and wouldnt go any further so got it replaced and has been working fine. You can find alot about the EM0480 grinder in another thread that is http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1138058473. Overall i think its a pretty good grinder and if you keep replacing it like someone said in another thread you would get a life time warranty!

If your just using it for plunger and drip it would make a great grinder since you can adjust the grind from one to another with the same courness that you had previously.

                  Hope that helps

                    Re: Newbie needing grinder advice

For what its worth, my EM0480 has been faultless...

The differences between the EM0480 and the EM0450 are...

The EM0480 is diecast metal... the EM0450 is plastic

The EM0480 has the switch option so you can use it manually.. the EM0450 is just an auto switch

The Burrset is exactly the same!! and I actually prefer the base of the EM0450 than the EM0480 :-)

                    Marc

$137... what are you waiting for... go get it man!! - the Delonghi KG100 has essentially been wiped out by the EM0450...

                        Re: Newbie needing grinder advice

I have had the EM0450 for a while now and have it paired with a Silvia and find I get excellent results. There is a good thread discussing some of the points of the 450 see http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1161409619

Good luck with the hunt for a grinder!

                          Re: Newbie needing grinder advice

                          Well,

I am off to pick up my EM0450 when my baby wakes up.

I rang around and ended up with the same price as you Spud - $137 from Good Guys. But given they are a little out of my way I rang a local place and asked if they would match the price. The assistant at R.T. Edwards Ipswich (where I am buying it as its much closer to home) said ... "yeeeeeaaaah okaaaaaaay I can do $137 - Ill only be making $7 on it though"

So there you go. Im happy with that!

                          Cheers,

                          Meg

Wake the baby up now and go! Actually no, I know how long you have to put up with a grizzly kid when that happens, so maybe wait!

                              ;D ;D ;D
My baby stops crying everytime she hears the grinder if she is sad. So maybe you can use your grinder as a settling technique for your little one as well
