  • Anyone use a manual burr-grinder coffee mill?

    Hi All,

My local barista swears she can get better results using her manual old-fashioned grinder versus most of the consumer-grade electrical grinders on the market.

Im just wondering if anyone on the forum has a similar experience and swears by their manual grinder?

If so, do you know brand/model/style/age etc off the top of your head?

    cheers

    Matt.

Im just curious however if anyone actually uses one day-to-day ?

They can easily be used on a daily basis

It does take approx 70 turns of the handle to grind a double shot

Thats the reason I dont use them often, plus I have 2 electric grinders that dont want to be neglected

Sounds like rubbish to me.  :

Any idea what make/model this super grinder is?

          Ask her to prove it.
          You can be the judge.

P.S. Make sure everything stays the same except the grinder.
i.e. Same beans, same espresso machine, etc.

To be fair, most consumer-grade electrical grinders are junk when it comes to espresso. Even the Rocky would be challenged to match the grind from a quality hand grinder when it comes to adjustability. On the other hand, there are a lot of hand grinders which lack top-burr stability for espresso grinding.

Any given hand grinder, on any given day.....

              What is meant by "consumer-grade"?

If it is the $30 blade grinder burners then yes.
If it is a $500 Rocky then no.

Same with the "manual old-fashion". Is this a Zassenhaus or some cheapy found at the 200cent shop?

If you take the quote as consumer grade as it was most likely meant as Sunbeam, Breville Delonghi etc then yes a good hand grinder will beat them for grind consistancy and flavour. If it was meant Rocky K3 (not really consumer)  or in that area then its time for some blind tastings but some of the modern Hand grinders will give them a run and match or beat them too.

As to hand grinders and espresso not all of them are or were up to it or were designed to do that job. Some of the Zassenhaus grinders are better than others at Espresso so dont buy one and assume it will be good for fine grinding.

Better bet are the ceramic Hario or Kyocera hand grinders if your intended use is Espresso.

Yeah, I used to swear by my manual Trespade grnder. Well, not so much sweat by it than At it.

Machines were invented to take the drudgery out of repetiive human motion (outboard v rowing oars etc).

I have a Kyocera, it works great but it is a pain to use. It requires a fair bit of work, to the point that at times my forearm starts to burn and if you are entertaining you spend half your night grinding.
