Best value for money under $200 would have to be the sunbeam 0480! (rrp $199 but I got mine brought down to $179 from a non sponsor)

You will find this machine at most department or electrical appliance stores ;D

While the 0450 is also good, the manual on/off switch is really handy on the 0480 allowing a more even filling of the basket.

However I believe the internal burrs are the same, just the outer of the cheaper one is plastic not stainless

Though, a word of warning... Both these machines are doserless and make a fair amount of mess

The best grinder under $200 is actually a good hand grinder for under $100, either the Hario or Kyocera versions grind better than the Sunbeam. That said most will prefer the electric convenience and in that case the 480 is a no brainer.

Hmm.. I just found out theres vendors out there selling the Ascaso i-Mini non-metal versions for $229 brand new. I wont say who because its not a sponsor but yeh... get me thinking, whats the difference between metal cosmetic and non metal (in terms of grinder quality)?

            Hey,

I have got the Sunbeam 450 and the 480...both are a good starting point, but I would like something better already after 6 months (mess, consistency?, retain quite a bit of coffee, steps are not small).
I have been eyeing the Lelit 53, just under 300 delivered, it seems to outclass some more expensive grinders.
All this according to reviews on the net, have a look.
A mate bought one, I am waiting for his assessment.
I would skip the Sunbeam and go right there.
Only if you are after one type of coffee, being stepless makes switching between brewing methods a no go.

Is this the general consensus?  I see this opinion given regularly, and had almost decided this would be the way to go, but a quick search of this forum also finds plenty of people willing to gripe about the grind consistency of the hand grinders (the Kyocera in particular being the one I was considering).  Is it more likely to be a case of those being the unlucky few to get the dud of the batch, and having it taint their experience?

The consistency of the modern ones is better generally than the older Zass De Pines etc when it comes to Espresso grind. I actually prefer the Zass for Syphon or Plunger type grinds over the Kyocera as it does a better job at that size as it has upper and lower burr supports..

Side issue who would want to live in the coldest wettest place in the state too (Warragul) At least the coffee is better than when I used to live there.

Im looking pretty much solely for use with a Breville Ikon with unpressurised basket... although the ability to take the Kyocera away on holidays and use it with the moka appeals!

And while Im sure it must be *substantially* warmer over your way, if I wanted to escape the cold, Id be heading back to my state of birth, QLD, not to the other side of this state

Depending on the size of the Moka also lok at the Hario skeleton or the smaller one as they both hold more beans than the Kyocara (neat double shot).
