As AM mentioned FRESH beans are critical. Also look in here http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1204007644 for the mod thread on the Breville 450 and see if that helps. On the Sunbeam it is the best of the cheapies but a modded Breville will be close so you wont be gaining much.
The Kyocera hand grinder is actually better than the 480 IMO and to my taste so if you do some traveling or early morning noise is a consideration one of these or the Hario might bear looking at.
Apart from that see what turns up here, maybe a Rocky, K3 etc or even look at a second hand smaller commercial
Thanks for pointing out the mod but thats what I already did. It seems to slip too or something, what works just fine for a while becomes too coarse on another day and vice versa. Although when I did the mod the grinder was already a couple of years old so maybe that didnt help.

Your profile / sig does not identify what equipment or coffee machine your talking about.
Further more, the issue of stale Vs fresh beans can also be a factor as a cheaper grinder will not manage stale beans as well as a higher end unit.
Ive gone to my profile to add that information in but I cant see it anywhere. Perhaps you need a minimum number of posts before youre allowed to have a signature? I dunno.
I have a Breville 800es (happy with it) and a Sunbeam Artista EM5900 (not happy with it).
Thats an interesting thought about the beans. I normally buy from EspressoGalleria in Sydney (from the shop) or mail order from Zentvelds Byron Bay. Much fresher than from a supermarket I would have thought but just how fresh to the exacting standards of forum members I really dont know.
Cant say Ive noticed if the grind is more consistent just after opening the bag as compared to the end of the bag but then again I havent been looking.

1: A top notch grinder under $300 will be very hard to find unless it is second-hand and even then that is cheep (new burrs would be needed at an additional $$$)
2: For under $200 the next would be teh EM0450 or Em0480
However it also depends on what machine your talking about....

Thus teh issue your seeing with your BCG 450 could be related to the beans and thus a slightly better grinder ie. Em0450 may not solve your perceived problem..
* A poor tradesman blames his tools
Yep better tools help, but one needs to be able to truly identify the root cause - otherwise a new pile of new tools may not solve teh problem.
I currently have a modded Breville BCG 450 that is just not up to the task. I can get the grind fine enough but the inconsistency is really annoying.
Can the EM0480 get the right grind for pressure-less baskets with good consistency or not? Failing that can anyone tell me if its possible to get any burr grinder new or used that is up to the task for not more than $200.
I love my coffee but I dont drink lots of it and I am just not willing to spend $600 (and even if I was willing my wife wouldnt let me) so please be practical with your recommendations!
