  • Breville BCG800 Smart Grinder

I am still using my original Sunbeam EM0480 to service my BCF Junior Plus and it appears to be doing an acceptable job . However, my No. 1 son, in the Melbourne area, has sighted the above subject grinder and is wondering if any CSr has any comments in regard to its operation. [smiley=dankk2.gif]

    Hmmm...

Think Id be going with an Iberital Challenge for around this money N-ACT before giving the Breville a go. It may well prove to be a decent grinder for the money but Id wait until such time as someone with a spare $300 can grab one and put it through its paces.....

I flew up to Sydney on Tuesday and while I was there, caught up with Dennis for a play on the LM and to see this grinder.

We were considering adding the Mahlkonig Vario to our range as we wanted an excellent small grinder but the issue was that it represented very average value for money in my opinion.

This grinder is better than any other appliance grinder I have ever used and I reckon its better than a Rocky as well. It blows anything up to about $500 completely out of the water.

We are thrilled to add it to our range. It will be brilliant for those wanting an excellent, but small grinder.

Needless that the Vario has been removed from our radar. I think the Breville is just as good.

              Hey Dennis

what setting (how far from the stop) are you grinding on to use this with the LM?

did you run some non decaf through it on the LM (what setting?)

the question i am asking is on a commercial machine how much is left in adjustment until its at the "stop"

              great price.....

                Re: Breville BCG800 Smart Grinder

Ive choked the LM using this grinder!

I currently have 3 more finer settings available for the decaf though am using the manual adjust feature to updose (as I always do).

Having the ability to place the group handle into the holder, press a button, then walk away while it grinds, makes life a whole lot easier!

                    Re: Breville BCG800 Smart Grinder

Cool - now I finally have a decent cheap grinder to refer people to!

Good review Den / Chris; Im sure these will sell very well, and they sound more than a few classes above the Sunbeam / De Longhi / etc., so really fantastic value for money. Its about time someone bought something to the market with this kind of versatility, but without the huge price tags associated with our normal level of snobbery.

I will have to go check one of these bad boys out in the flesh - looking for a new filter coffee grinder.

Chris or Dennis, can you comment on its ability to perform as a filter grinder for various applications eg paper filter, metal filter, syphon, plunger?

                        Re: Breville BCG800 Smart Grinder

                        Hi Dave

I havent used it yet for syphon or press and probably wont get to do so for another couple of weeks.

Ill be surprised if it disappoints, though am still very much a novice when it comes to syphon.

                        Cheers!

Its definitely something Ill be looking at when I get sick of hand grinding, a great price for a starter machine with all the benefits for the pedantic person ;D

Any idea of what Burrset it runs? Looks like a great step up on the entry level appliances too

Its a Breville conical burr set.

They are made of stainless steel and the measurement of the cutting edge on the top burr is 37.7mm diameter at its widest point and 32.5mm diameter at the narrowest point.

To remove the top burr, the hopper is first unlocked, providing access to the top burr which is encased in a plastic material (shown in the not so good photo). The plastic housing is then twisted slightly to remove the burr and the whole operation takes about 10 seconds.

Reassembly is just as easy and theres no need to recalibrate.
