  • Re: Breville BCG800 Smart Grinder

    Gday Mick.

While I havent had your exact problem (I use the single basket once in a blue moon! ;D) there are two things you can do.

    1. Use the adjust amount knob - can go to plus or minus 5.

and/or 2. Filll the basket using the auto feature, then tap the basket on the bench to settle the grounds, and then maually add extra before tapping leveling/distributing and tamping.

I find, now that I have actually improved my technique enough for just option 2 (with no change to the +/- knob) - the rest is just getting the fineness of the grind set right for the beans you are using (Im assuming yours are fresh?) The basket shouldnt be/doesnt need to be as full after tamping as by previous practice with the 6910/0450 suggested! :-[

Yes mate, I am using fresh beans. Thanks for the reply, your dead right about not filling the basket as high it seems this grinder is helping my whole grind, tamp and pour technique.
      Cheers,
      Mick.

        Hi Guys,

First time poster after being a long time reader! I got the BCG800 a couple of weeks ago and am so far very happy with it!

What is the easiest way to get the shim kit? Is it email Phil or ring Breville?

        Thanks!

          Valvster,

Good to hear your feedback. I was especially interested in knowing from people that already used both models from Breville, since I actually have the modded BCG450XL.

It seems that this grinder really is great value for money. Im very excited to get mine but I believe it will come only after two weeks, since I bought it in USA and Im Brazil...

Leonardo I have been following this thread and your questions for some time. I received my Smartgrinder yesterday and have only had 2 shots from it...you will be impressed.
Im a total newbie to this home coffee thing but there was a huge leap in taste compared to the BCG450.
The missus complains it looks like Robbie the Robot sat on the kitchen bench but my coffee making is now mess free and she even reckons it tastes better than most coffee shops.
Next step, single wall non-pressurised baskets for the Breville Cafe Roma.
Oh, and a proper tamper instead of that idiot plastic thing.

So Valvster, any news on your experience with BCG800?

I recently discovered my modded BCG450 is creating a lot of fines. I was drinking espresso for a long time but decided to do a drip coffee...

In the end of cup there are, lots of very fine particles. I hope BCG800 ll address these issues, since it has a more stable fixing engine.

Gday Leonardo....Im extremely happy with my purchase, I only do double cappuccinos for my wife and I (twice a day) but reckon Ive dialled it in just right, 60ml in 28 secs, and I am amazed at the taste difference between the BCG450 and the BCG800. Of course the 450 was not modified and I used to set it to "Turkish" but the grind was inconsistent and nowhere near fine enough, 60ml in 15secs.
I fill directly into the basket by setting it to one shot, then distribute, then do another shot but hit the cancel button when the basket is full enough. If there is any spillage its caught in the tray which is cleverly held in place by a magnet.
No fines in the bottom of the coffee cup either but Im still using the pressurised basket which came with my Breville Cafe Roma.

Yes, indeed...as far as I know the actual rating of Baratza grinders is not only because of its quality, but mainly for its excellent customer service.

It seems that Breville is going to follow the same way. Good news.

Actually got a response this afternoon from Breville. Not sure if it had anything to do with Phil or not :-?

The response when asking for the shim kit is:

"Please note that this is not available in North America for the time being and we have no specific date as to if & when it will be made available to Breville Canada and USA."

So, my respect for Breville just dropped a notch.....

As far as I know, North America is sending them out where required. Have just sent an email to the North American team to determine the situation & will post here the outcome.

                                Cheers, Phil
