    Re: Breville BCG800 Smart Grinder

Can you comment on the consistency of the grinds compared to the BCG450? I have one, and if it has the same burrs, what sets the 800 apart? Is it just the finer grind? Is it a better build quality? Since the 450, even when modified, doesnt sound like a grinder to compare with $500+ models.

    thanks

Its a Breville conical burr set. Wink
      Well duh

Should have been more specific in is it a new burr set or is it just their old one from the the BCG or the same set as the BES860 Espresso machine?

The quick release is a good idea at this level as it allows a no tool clean like the Sunbeam 480.

Still good bang for the $$

Ive been in touch with Breville, and received the following information from Phil McKnight, who is their Coffee Guru/Beverage Specialist:

"The 450 was a product with minimal input from Breville. On the other hand, the 800 was engineered from the ground up. Started with a blank piece of paper & specd out from scratch. As you know it grinds fine enough to choke a linea & at the same time will grind coarse enough for Plunger & its great for V60 pourover! I use it for a V60 every day."

        AND

"The 800 burr set is a conical set but not exactly the same as the 860.

The 800 burr set has the bottom cone shaped burr fixed to its drive
shaft & held with an acorn nut similar to a Robur etc. This is why the
burr set for the 800 is not interchangeable with the 860. Burr material
        used is the same.

The 800 grinder burr speed is approx 490rpm. This is the average speed of our internal "no load" manufacturing specs."

So the assumption is that this process means a better grind than the 450? Or did you compare it? (Just out of curiosity )

I understand that Im not in your shop about to buy one so you might not be able to justify the time on that answer, but again, just curious

I would certainly prefer a sponsor (if there were any nearby) over someone like hardly normals, etc.

          thanks

No assumption Iain. The 450 is pretty much universally accepted as not up up to the task for espresso. We compared the BCG800 with Dennis BNZ through the Linea, so theres no assumption.

Fact is its a category killer up to at least Rocky point and I reckon its as good as the vario too.

              Re: Breville BCG800 Smart Grinder

No Iain, I didnt compare it to the 450.

I have direct experience with the Lelit, Iberital, Ascaso, Isomac, Rocky, and a few other grinders under $600, though these werent present at the time of my evaluation of the 800.

I did compare it to the 2 BNZs and K3T I use at the shop. The Smart Grinder has consequently replaced the K3T for decaf duty. The BNZs are safe.

Assume what you will from this.

I currently have "enough" small grinders but if I didnt I would consider one. Thanks for clarifying the Burr thing and great to see they have changed them for a better set.

With the grinder on Espressoish what sort of shopt time for a double with the slow speed burrs would be interesting too?

I timed and stated this in my review BF - 15 second average, depending of course on whatever dose one calls, "a double".

A big advantage for me is that I can place the group handle under the outlet, press a button, then do other things while it doses.

I was asked to recommend a grinder for a gift today used with their saeco Via V.....

                    choices EMO480 or BCG800

i was going to suggest both
                    base line EMO480
                    next step up BCG800
                    or ?

Dennis and Chris, i value your opinion. should they spend the extra $100....

sorry, wasnt implying you didnt know what you were talking about guys, I tend to be a bit pedantic at times I forgot you compared it to all the other "junior" grinders, each of which would out-do my 450. Now where are those GR parts I ordered

Apart from the nice build quality, finish, and grind, the features alone are comparable to the Vario. Its worth every cent.

                          Breville Smart Grinder

                          Hey guys

Have just purchased a Rancilio Silvia on eBay and need to start looking at a decent grinder. Obviously the Rocky marries well to the Silvia but as my budget is limited I was looking at some other options. Have noticed the review on the new Breville Smart Grinder and the price point makes this a serious contender. Perhaps its a little too new to get some feedback on this one and how well it works - obviously there are some electronic parts in this one, so servicing may be a problem.

                          Thoughts?

                            Hi Daniel

I think its more likely that your Silvia will need attention well before the Smart Grinder, which has a 12 month replacement warranty.

Im giving some serious consideration to this grinder.

They look good on specs, features etc.

Another option is to look into buying a hand grinder (Hario/Kyocera) if you are only making one or two at a time, pocket the change and save some more to look at around the K3 range in a few months.

Just my thoughts but the rocky is now fairly exe for what it is and there is better value to be had IMO for around similar $$
