  • Re: Breville BCG800 Smart Grinder

Hi all, first time post - long time addict!

I recently found that my Gaggia MM grinder wasnt all that it cracked up to be, even after I modded it to go as fine as possible.  I found this out by buying a Silvia.  Nothing really to comment that hasnt been said before about her, apart from it looking better in real life than in pics!

So I noticed a few major dept stores had specials relating to this type of homeware.  Went in and couldnt find stock anywhere.  Went into another more specific store and got a price match.  I would have purchased via a sponsor, as I did with the Silvia - thanks jetblack, but these were desperate times, and got a similar - but not better price.

So I got it home, got a visual approval from my wife (the grinder, not me!).  Was then going to jump into explaining about shims and why Id need them on a brand new grinder.   Fired it up, wound it to the finest setting and choked the life out of the Silvia. Actually even choked the grinder on a 1 week old PNG peaberry.

Currently only 2-3 steps toward the espresso side, and just working out my techniques!

Very happy with the grinder, the PF start stop is great.  and it is so much cleaner and quieter than the Gaggia MM!

    Cheers!

Hopefully not, but as all you need is a stainless washer or two, if you have a specialist nuts and bolts place near you ... (if things are like they are here a big chain hardware store is not the place to go! :)

Im wondering weather I should give this grinder a go considering its price and replace my Rocky... but it may not live up to expectations if its not right out of the box :-/

It is a VERY simple fix if it isnt.

And it may be the latest shipment is from a batch where the problem has been solved.

Either way, Im very happy with mine.

Ill buy your Rocky off you and sell it back to you for 10 times the price when the Nreville dies (in ten years according to their testing) : :P

No, what I meant was that it would last at least 10 years.

Anyway, let us know if you still have your Rocky in 10 years time. ;D

My Nemox Lux is 13. Ill send you an invite to its 23rd and Mr Rockys 12th. Well be having a combined birthday party with a cake in the shape of a Nreville and slave robots will dance for our pleasure.

Back OT, is the BCG800 the same size (what is the measurement of these burrs in mm?) and design burr set at the old Lux or has it been modded for better consistency with the timed/dosed function?

My Lelit Combi is coming up to 15 (original pump/boiler element) only GH gaskets & burrs changed).  It is on loan to a friend at present & he cant believe the shots it is pumping out.  But then again it is Italian.

I have a Singer sewing machine that is almost 100 years old and still works beautifully. I doubt that if I were to buy a Singer today, it would still be running in 100 years.

Will look forward to the party though.

Its a Breville conical burr set.

They are made of stainless steel and the measurement of the cutting edge on the top burr is 37.7mm diameter at its widest point and 32.5mm diameter at the narrowest point.

Well I think I have the finest grinding unit Breville have produced.

Mine just choked the LM in a Synesso double a full 12 increments out from finest grind. No shims, just straight out of the box.

Im loving it as an Aeropress grinder as well.

It does smell a touch "electrical", but I am hoping thats just due to newness.

                          Chris

I think ours are closely related.

Ive got mine set 11 back right now. It was back a few more, but Ive reduced the grind amount from full "more" back to the center.

Not sure if its right yet. My cremas not looking as good as some of the pics Ive seen here. But theres only so many shots a guy can pull, and it breaks my heart pouring them down the sink!

Probably just some slight carbon brush arcing mate; this always creates an odour and nothing to worry about...

                              Mal.

Since there are only 15 espresso settings do you consider this a good thing? Basically the majority of your espresso range is useless as currently shimmed. Aside from choking your machine have you actually pulled any acceptable/drinkable shots on your LM?
