Guys, if you find you are too far up the espresso range for the way you dose and/or your specific equipment, you can remove the bottom burr & then remove some of the factory installed shims that will be sitting on the drive shaft. Usually, I would like to have it sitting 3 to 4 divisions (on the LCD) from the finest setting when dosing 18g into a Synesso basket using a LM or our new machine still in the Breville skunkworks (but emerging soon!). This will ensure that the dose timing control works as designed & you will have enough range left at the drip/press end of the scale. At least you (the consumer) have a way of tweaking it to suit your own setup & preferences.

      Cheers, Phil

So this is a little bit of a lazy post, but I also think an answer would be useful to many.

Which of the site sponsors stock the Smart Grinder?

Ok, on the list so far are:

        Cuppacoffee
        E61 Espresso Machinery
        Talk Coffee

Talk Coffee and E61 spring to mind as sellers of this grinder.

Your list is correct. We tested and provided a review of this grinder and were the first Sponsor to stock it.

              Hi oldbeamer2,

Bought my smartgrinder from Talk Coffee.  Both Dennis from Cuppacoffee and Chris from Talk_Coffee show great support for CSers (including newbies dumb questions :)

My triple bottom line for buying such an item is sale price, site sponsor, service and support.

OT but wondering what bmw you ride as have very fond memories of my R60/5, it could go anywhere  8-)

Very good idea, I was actually thinking about this earlier this morning because Id wound the grind back to the first setting in espresso and had a really great cup.  When I took it back one more it told me to take out the cradle as it just changed into percolator mode.   Will give it a whirl in the morning.

                  cheers

Pulled a 0.45mm shim out this morning, there were 5 in total of varying thicknesses. (see those digital callipers are an essential item) Seems to have moved my choke point closer to the finest setting. Had a nice slow pour at about half way.

I feel like Ive got a lot more room to move now

I need a new grinder, my Sunbeam, I really cant be bothered with the string mod, and preground has freshness issues.

How good are these Breville grinders, I dont have an issue using the shim kit if there is a bit of batch variation issues (hey III support innovation if the price is right)

Was considering a Compak K-3 Touch, but Breville is 1/2 price, and is looking like it has a following from users and sponsors.

                        Betterathome,

According to other users were commenting here the Breville Smart seems to be a better grinder than Sunbeam.

I never used the Sunbeam but I bought a Breville. Until now Im very satisfied with this grinder. It has a nice grind quality, obviously not as good as K3 but very consistent considering its price range. Some users even reported better quality of grinding than Rancilio rocky.

Besides that, its a very, very beautiful grinder, has an excellent footprint to fit regular kitchens (like mine) and the dosing features are convenient. It doesnt make mess, its easy to clean and the portafilter bracket is very useful in my opinion.

The weak points I see are the speed and a certain lack of precision in the dosing, issues that I strongly believe that could be solved with a more powerful motor.

If you liked the Sunbeam I believe you probablyll get very satisfied with the Breville.

Just picked up a bcg800 from Dennis @ cuppacoffee. Great little grinder with great WAF (wife approval factor). She is actually happy to let me leave it on the countertop.
