I would be disappointed too.  I really cant understand why Breville & Sunbeam cant manufacture them so theyre good to go out of the box.  At the very least they should supply shims in the box.
Manufacturing tolerances make this difficult in a volume product, to get it right for every unit costs money and I think the right cost/benefit decision has been made (personal opinion).

I understand why volume retailers dont include shims as standard as it may potentially confuse their customers (as long as there are instructions on how to obtain them for the better informed consumers).

It is even nicer to know that retailers who would reasonably expect their customers to be well informed (as part of the sales process if not before), include the kit as standard.

They are a mass produced Item at a mass produced price.

If you dont like it pay a lot more and get the more expensive item that will work straight out of the box.

Yep! I agree and I did.... And you should see the smug look Im sporting as a result.... Unbearable honestly ;D. I dont want to think now many coffees my little Nemox Lux has ground in its 12 years and it has worked perfectly right out of the box. Also, it has now been hammered grinding beans for the staff plungers at school every day for the last 2 years and is starting to look and sound exactly the same. Of course I paid well in excess of $200 for it a long time ago. I believe that they cost much these days...? Hmmm what a confusing post Ive written. Anyone would think Ive had my brain addled by a National Mens Choral Festival.. Goodnight CSssszzzz.....

When I bought my Sunbeam 0450 it worked "out of the box" and back then there was no feedback here of any problems.

The QC appeared to drop some time later and the need for shims became almost the norm.

          Pity.

Just another thumbs up for the Breville Smart Grinder. I received it as a birthday present from my partner and its been working flawlessly since February.

Ive only got it paired up with an EM4800 (with unpressurised baskets) but Ive already noticed a difference compared to using the DeLonghi KG100 previously.

Its extremely cleverly designed and not only does it look good, it works with minimal mess.

Highly recommend it to people based on my limited experience!!

Im loving the grinder and was close to not needing the shim kit but I got my kit today (thanks phil) so I can try to get a grind in between my current 2nd and 3rd finest setting.

as so many have said, its very easy to use and clean!

Im actually very interested in getting this grinder ($240 from E61 inc shipping, awesome!) with the shim kit. About that, should I contact someone here on CS or Breville about acquiring it?

Also, how does it compare against slightly higher tier grinders like the Rocky? Im not too familiar with other grinders, and I was tempted to save up for something like the Ibertial Challenge or Lelit PL043, but the pretty positive reviews for the Breville make it appealing.

Im currently using the BES860 combo, it produces (in my opinion) very nice coffee, but the grinder is slightly inconsistent (even after some tinkering as recommended by another CSer) and Id like to invest in a more bang for your buck grinder for long term reasons, should I decide to upgrade. Also, being a student, I wont be getting a Mazzer or Compak any time soon...

Hi Boos, you may want to contact Chris from Talk Coffee, he has an even more amazing price and I think he ships his grinders with the shim kit.

I have not used the Breville grinder yet but other reports suggest its as good or better than the Rocky.

Hmm, will do, thanks for the tip. Yeah, Ive been skimming through the thread, it seems that many people are pleased with it, and despite the fact that the burrs are the same as the ones in the BES860, functionality wise its seemingly much better!

                    I feel the upgraditis brewing

Its a matter of principle. We wont lay down on this one.

I know this thread is a little stale now, but I thought Id add my experience with the BCG800. Ive just purchased one - June 2011 - and it already had the shims fitted.

Only problem was Breville had fitted 4 shims - 1 x 1.0mm, 2 x 0.4mm and 1 x 0.5mm. The result was that even on percolator settings I was getting such a fine ground that it was choking my espresso machine.

Luckily I had read about the shim kit and instructions on CS and had also seen a couple of You Tube videos about the BCG800 by Seattle Coffee Gear, so I knew how much shimming was actually required for a new grinder.

I ended up just using the 1.0mm and 0.4mm and now I get a great grind for my BES820 with 4 notches up my sleeve if I need it. And I have more shims for the future.

This is a great grinder that makes almost no mess at all for a pretty good price - theres CS sponsors that have it for less than $250.

                              Thanks for feedback snewman!

I have ordered BCG800 and was wondering what the current situation was with the shims.

Did either of you guys end up doing a lab test on the particle grind size from the BCG800?
